I hear older Dodge colors have a lot of flake?

  2. Richard maybe the late model cas have flake but I just don't know I can't see it being cost effective.

Probably what you are looking for is a metalic and maybe a metalic pearl.

That car there looks like it may be a 21st century cad color. So that only gives you 12 years of chips to look at. :D:D

The gold on a 2001 PT Dream Cruiser special edition is pretty nice...

  4. I want a similar shade to the body color, but metalflake. I was quoted a little over $1,000 for a gallon of paint and 2 quarts of primer, incl. the reducer, hardener, clear, etc.

Two thoughts...1975 Lincoln Towncars had a very heavy metalic on them, but they might not have a color as orange as you want. The other option is to loook at motorcycle colors. The color choices are much brighter than cars.

  6. 1970 Cadillac had a beautiful Firemist Bright Gold.
Very close to actual metal flake.
I owned an Eldo and a Fleetwood Brougham that color years ago
Caddy has killer Firemist paints in the 70's

Try these guys... pricing on the flake seems reasonable and you can surely find some clear for less than $1000!!!! (That's just robbery)

Cant you just buy HOK flakes and add them to your basecoat or clear? I know they offer five grain sizes and the "Ultra-Mini Flakes" come in 3 sizes and will smoothout with Top Coats.

  9. That's exactly what my painter suggested. Probably Gonna go with '70 Caddy Regency Firemist Gold with flakes in the first couple coats of clear. I love the color and will sound a lot coller describing it than P. T. Cruiser Gold!:) even though that is a pretty nice color.

HOK uses a really thin polyester, which make them easy to work with and the ultra-thins reflect like bigger flakes so you get the best of both worlds. Good luck.

If you find an older color you like you may save some money. But whether it's factory paint or not, ,many of today's colors are expensive because of the type and amount of pearls used. The pearls drive the price sky high.

Gak! A guy here in town had a 1949-52 Chevy painted the PT Cruiser color and it was HIDEOUS!! Metallic mustard.
I'll second your vote for the Caddy color, and not just because it sounds more cool when you say it.

Agreed... here's a shot of some caddy firemist gold... throw a little flake in the clear and you'd be a god at the drive in.

  18. Probably on the Jockey Journal.

  19. A word from someone who's been there; do all the shopping you want but don't buy the paint till it's ready to be sprayed. Any idea why?

with the HOK paint do you need a special gun to spray the flake?
    like what size tip? thanks

  21. Why Lee? I'm getting it Friday, he'll probably spray this weekend.

If you are spraying a true flake, usually a painter uses a conventional gun with a large tip. I have one and it's only for flake.

Had a 70 GTO that was a nice gold metalic color. For the life of me I can't think of the name of it. Check the charts.

How about the new Ford "Yellow Blaze Metallic"? This is the color I want for my '40 Ford coupe. Kind of a subdued version of Pagan Gold IMHO [IMG]

I like the ultra and mini flake from HOK personally.
Just so you know, though, the special metallic used in the old Caddy Firemist paints, has not been available for many years now. I think a paint mixer told me that back in the late 80's. There is a subs***ute they use, but it doesn't look the same!!!!!!!

The only ture Factory sprayed Meatlflake that I can think of came out in the mid/late 70's on Norton motorcycles! They offered 5 colors, (Silver, gold, blue, red, purple I think) while not b*** boat sized it was larger then mini flake.
