About 20 years ago, I purchased 2 slide shows from the great photographer/striper, Andy Southard. They were full of rods and customs from the east as well as a ton of rides after he ventured west. Anyone remember what Im talking about?

I had part 1 and 2 immediately after Ray Soff told me about their availability. I had figured that there might be some pics of my car on there long before coming to the realization that it was never in a show other than the 56 Autorama. They are no where to be found. They were 2 taped packed with stuff. Who knows Andy well enough to find out? Like I said, the books were only a fraction of the stuff on the videos.

I also had these tapes and they were awesome! I just went looking for mine and all I found was a paper with the contents of volume #2. There were slides from California car shows and shops from 1959 and 1960.Vol. 2 contained 584 pictures and it states Vol #3 was coming.....I need to keep looking for mine!

Somebody needs to talk to Andy to see if he want to bring those out again.... but then on DVD. I bet he would sell a ton of them, especially if he combines Custom Cars and Hot Rods.

I have read and reread his books so many times they are falling apart. Would love to see these pics on DVD.

  16. I think that the reason you don't see a lot of Andy's photos reproduced is that he is very much against having them reprinted without permission.I had spoken with him about posting a picture of him striping a motorcycle tank back in 1957 on my Yahoo group and he gave permission with the proviso that it not be used for any personal gain and I respect that.

I would LOVE to purchase a copy of those, particularly if they were on DVD rather than VHS. (I assume that's what everyone means by "tapes"?)

Andy Southard's Custom Cars Of The 50's is my absolute bible. It's the best Custom education one can get. Have dog eared mine to death.

    Would love to see more!

Has there been any new developments regarding the availability of these DVD's? Would love a set.

  27. I also would be very interested in this.

  28. I had spoken with Andy some time ago and he was in the process of going through his pictures(slides as well as photos and negatives)and sorting out the ones he thought would be suitable.
The reason it is taking so long is that he said that he has approximately 18,000 color photos and about 50,000 black and white ones. Not sure how many slides he has but most professional photographers of the time(and he is most surely a professional)preferred slides as being superior in quality to prints.
I also have about 18 DVDs that he sent to me including some that included his trip across country in 1956 in his 50 Ford sedan(made from movie film)and cruising around LA following Dick Tiago's Ranchero and of his birthday parties.
He sent them with the proviso that they would not be duplicated and I will respect that.

Wow. Those surely would be incredible to see! Please tell Andy to just include every one of those 18,000 color and 50,000 black and white images. I have gone over his Hot Rods and Customs Of The Fifties books so many times and every time I look at them I still see something new.

I'm also a big fan of his paint and striping work. He certainly had a signature style that's like no one elses to this day. I think the forms and shapes his striping took has a look all their own.

I look forward to seeing whatever he's willing to share with us. Whatever it is, I'm sure I'll be able to spend hours and days looking at.

Mahalo Andy for all the incredible documentation.
