I enjoy stories like that too!
Speaking of cars sitting... my friend in R.I. drives to Maine (1986) and buys a 1941 ford 2 door sedan in stock (Good) condition for $5,000. He drives it home, puts it on 4 jackstands and removes the wheels. He told me that he would make a Hotrod out of it as soon as he finishes his AMX. Well.. It's still sitting there and he is now 64 and is doing major drivetrain work on his pickup truck. He did say he'd sell it ($5,000) as is. It's in the same shape, but the paint is shot and it hasn't run since parked.
By the way....he "Recently" finished his AMX!

2. I am just about to send Russ this link. He is the 89 year old that preserved the car from about 1964 till 2003. He's a great guy and I'm hopefully going to get all the bugs out and make the 2 hour drive in the summer and meet him in person.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. Notice the fire extinguishers on the p***enger side. I saw that link to a Plymouth that burned to the ground on its maiden voyage. Also notice the trunk is up a bit. I was needing a boost to get me stoked on working on it so a drive would set me back in motion. So the jumper cables that are hooked to the bumper bolts are actually hooked to the negative side of the battery. This will not be perminant!!! LOL.
I'm actually still grinning about my drive!!!!!! Its been 50 years since the car has been driven and I'm 50 in 3 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If possible, you should try and get pictures of Russ with the car. It's amazing to have a car with history like this. Nice job getting it driving again!

Well done. quite the deal indeed.

Nothing like that maiden run after a long slumber.

The 36 five window has great proportions.

Nice to see the progress... I was at your place shortly after you brought it home... Nice story too... One more vote for getting down there soon to meet with the old-timer. Just remember, he's still the same guy, just older now... Fantastic!

10. Thanks!! I'm actually going to call Russ as I emailed him but he doesn't look at his emails daily. I'll tell him to click on the link I added to his email so he can read all of your comments. As far as age, I know lots of people that are as Wildcycles said " Are the same person just older and a little slower unless of co**** you are talking Gene Winfield!!! LOL!!!

11. So I have been working on the 1936 burning the midnight oil. Took a week off of work and been finishing up loose ends. I can now actually say I have 180 trouble free miles on my 1936!!! The paint buffed out pretty nice considering its at least 60 years old.

18. Email from Russ!!!

Hi Steve,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
Wow!!,that 36 sure looks good. Steve feel free to come down for a visit any time We are almost always here. We have to leave once in awhile for doctors appointments I am sure looking forward to being able to touch that vehicle.

I think Russ is 88 now!!

19. So I took the cruise to Olympia. It was 88 miles each way just to see and meet Russ Albert. His friend Chet Evans found the car for him back in 1963 in an open field about 4 miles from his house. I got the story right from Russ and his friend. Russ was looking for a 1936 and this car just appeared in this open field. It took Russ about a month to find the owner of the property and the car. He paid $250 and then towed it home with Chet steering the car. Russ took it all apart and then sand blasted the car and got it painted back in 1965ish. He then hung all the fenders on the walls and had parts in his ba*****t and in the garage for putting it together one day. Things always got ahead of the 1936 and then his wife got MS in 2003. So Russ sold all his stuff and sold the car to Bill Dietrich in our car club in 2003. Bill put the car together the best he could but then ran out of steam in 2011. I bought the car and finished bolting all the fenders, body etc together and did the wiring, re-did a ton of work and now it is on the road. I have put over 600 miles in the last week!!!! I'm having a blast!!! So I got an alignment done yesterday and it sure helped out on the handling but when I was on my way to Olympia, it had a deadly vibration at 50 on up. It was bad. So I call a bunch of tire companies to balance the front tires as it was transmitting through the steering wheel real bad. Nobody was willing to help unless I waited for 2 hours for a 10 minute job. So my wife and I braved it to Russes house and got to let him see his old car after 50 years. It was really cool as he invited Chet, (his friend that found the car for him) his son Ken(?) and his wife and of co**** Russ. They all took pictures of the car and were thrilled to see it on the road again. 50 YEARS LATER!!!!!!!! So here are some pictures.

Russ is in the blue shirt and his friend Chet is the one that found the car for him.

This picture is me with the good ol guys that preserved this car till 2003. I need to get a picture of Bill Dietrich to finish the history of this car as far as I can find Bill had the car from 2003-2011. Bill has the original bill of sale for the 1936 that has the guys name that sold it to Russ but he has misplaced it. Ugh!! Oh well maybe some day it will re appear. Oh and the car has 98,000 original miles. Thats about 1200 miles a year. LOL!!
Oh and I had to drive all the way back until about 20 miles away from my house and Discount tire took care of the tire balance in 10 minutes free of charge!!! It drove real smooth the rest of the way home.
What a cool way to spend a nice sunny day in WA.

Nice car, and very cool that Russ got to see it finished.

22. very cool story and well done on the latest chapter - I don't think it'll be the
final chapter though .

23. It must have really meant something to him as he invited his best friend after all these years and to have his son come to see the car also. And with the 351 ( a rare option) Ford in a Ford and AOD overdrive, I got 21 miles to the gallon.

you did good mr. whippet!!!!!!!!!!!.you just gave a old timer a wonderful present.something he will never forget and cherish till his end comes.good on you brother. now as far as wheels and tires, i love it with whats on there now.getting kinda of tired of all the whitewalls.good to see a old car with blackwalls now and then.i always thought that whitewalls (big ones) took it away from the car. seems they are what first draws your attention then kinda keeps it not really getting to focus on the car.

Well said, You should be proud of your self. I am sure it means alot to him that you took the time to look him up and let him enjoy the car again. I love these stories. Well done!

Reminds me of a story of when I was working in the marine parts business. This one nice old fellow comes in needing a part for his boat. Not having it in stock, I told him I would order it for him and asked him how fast he needed it. His answer was "Well, I'm 82".
