We went to St. Thomas Virgin Islands on vacation this week and had NO IDEA that I'd spot any Hot Rod material. While riding the taxi (think Dually with benches in the bed)..... I spotted what I thought was a Model A Roadster.... Sure enough, the next day we shot these two pics from the road at a high rate of speed. Damn, these taxi drivers are nutty as a squirrel turd. Oh yeah, they drive LHD vehicles on the left side of the road.... WFO. Crazy. Look close it's there. Anybody else ever spotted Hot Rod stuff in a place you never thought it would be?
When I was down there I rented a Motorbike and went all over the island. It was great 'til the brakes went out on the way down the mountain.
It was definitely rough, but.... In that remote location it was REALLY cool to see. The Island is SO beautiful, but really hard on equipment. It's amazing to me that a Henry '30-'31 roadster made it this long just sitting on the side of the main road. I'm sure from talking to the local guys that plenty of these old cars still exist on the Islands. One old man said.... "They came here new in 1932 also, and never left" How bout that....?
Kevin, I went on a cruise yrs ago..and went to St. Thomas, St. Croix and San Juan..I have to agree with the "taxi drivers" in the Virgin Islands...I thought I was going to die a few times just going up a mtn..at 100 mph,lol...as for the roadster..thats very cool!!
Ahhhh....... K's old rusty roadster. Years ago it was seriously rusty because of being on St. Thomas since new. RHD too, right?
Holy **** those taxi drivers are crazy. 70mph in a 10mph zone is just NUTS. So, you obviously know this guy? I should have known..... You know every car on the planet.
OK ClubCoupe37. Your iden***y is revealed. I recognized your hood ornament before I even saw you were from Chattanooga. Good to see you on here. John L
Some of my family re located to the VI... the drug runner boats are all over there, they hold a race out there and some locals compete. There isnt much old car stuff out there but st.thomas is pretty big compared to the other islands. On the smaller islands the want is a jeep or samurai and all hopped up to drag race up the steep hill sides.... crazy drivers to say the least!
Where does he race? It's a small island...... There's a beautiful 1/2 mile dirt track right in the middle of town. Bikes could race there weekly....
Did a cruise around the Carribbean a couple of years ago, and a bus tour on Curaso, out towards the "Hato caves" I saw an immaculate red 63/4 Chevy Nova pro streeter parked in a locals carport. I couldnt believe what I saw the first time, so on the return trip checked again, sure enough it was a Nova.. Quite a bit further along the road I saw a very rough mid 70s Pontiac firebird lying in a yard..
cool story...would you beleive Denmark sold the 3 Islands..Sankt Thomas, Sankt Jan and Sankt Croix, to the USA for 25.000.000 dollars..this was in 1917! info is to no use at all..i know! -Palle
