Frizby and I left for Salina at midnight Thursday night. We decided to drive all night and enjoy a little of the show on Friday. We were hauling ass and all was going well when I spotted a law man on the side of the road in St. Louis. I jabbed on the brakes instinctively, and I got pulled over and got a ticket for 80 in a 60. I guess it was good that I hit the brakes or it would have been much worse! We finally get to Salina around 9:30 or so and were really ready for a nap. Unfortunately we weren't able to check in until the afternoon, so we went to the liquor store and got some beer and went on to the show. We hooked up with "the heros in training" (Fritz, and Moriarty) and schmoozed with some of the biggest names in the customizing world. Pretty damn cool. We managed to keep at it until 11 or so at night when the 1 hour of sleep finally caught up with us and we turned in. Saturday was cool as well, more cars, and we sat through one of the weirdest award ceremonies I have ever been to, complete with a Cher imersonator. I told Fritz that it would have seemed normal if we were on acid. Here is what won the Barris award.....and you all know I ain't kidding.
Bill Hines and his guys chopped the top of a Chevy over the weekend. As of noon on Sunday when we left, it wasn't done. Here are some pics of it.
Dr J, Winfield and Barris are such good buddies that they were able to share! You couln't walk by her all weekend without one of those two standing by her. Winfield actually gave his pic to a car though. Here are a couple of "in progress" customs. The one with all of the rod is eldon Titus's newest project. It started as a $60 S-10. Perhaps those that are broke can follow suit to build a similar project. The other is more my style, the "let's see what is out in the yard and weld it together" style. I thought it was cool.
actuallay if i may correct you on the bubble in construction machine, it is owned by gary meyers with guidence from eldon, most of the tube was done by the pair but the car it self belongs to gary!! wasnt that a great show!!
That awards banquet was the absolute worst, most horrible waste of six hours I have ever sat through......I had a great time making fun of the cher thingie......the show was alright. we had a 300Z or something follow us home on Saturday. they asked us if we knew we were going over 100 on the highway.......
Missed the big thing Saturday night at the motel... looked too packed for me. So the boy and I went to the movies... stopped in the mall parking lot to help someone with their hood up, and ended up jump-starting a $30,000 Porsche with my $5,000 Ford... made my weekend!
Chad, yeah he said something about it. He said I was going too fast, Ha Ha Ha. It isn't the first time I have been pulled over in it either. By the time I got home the truck had about 8200 miles on it. It was 8.5 hours to Salina one way. The late Saturday night activites were OK. But yes, that award ceremony did suck ass. We had the only table that was full of beer cans. Without those it would have REALLY sucked. They should have had Alvis Presley sing all night instead of Cher.
Sounds like the typical KKOA event. Terrible talent, awards ceremony and not all that many decent cars. I haven't paid dues since the first year they came to Lancaster, Ohio but I still continue to recieve the Trendsetter Toilet Paper! I still would like someone to define Bluejean Rapp'in. Shoe
This whole weekend was bad ass! Me and Brian headed up Thurs. night and arived at like 1am w/ a beer infection kickin in and had no rooms- the band rooms weren't till Fri. so we slept in the car. Not so bad unless the back seat is filled with band equip. so we both slept sitting up in the front seat, that sucked! that nudey bar kicked ass, I ended up w/ some waitress #. The coolest part of the weekend was hanging w/ Bill Hines and autographing the stripers! Signing poeples mags. wasn't bad either- I could get used to that.
Yeah plowboy, I have to agree with ya on the activities. We were never formally introduced but I was the guy whose wife was holding us up from headed to the bar Sat. night. The spacetruck kicks ass man, I'm just sorry that you got stuck with drunk ass Monty riding shotgun that night...haha.
that dumbass Monty aka Doush Bag fell off of the cement wall thing in the construction area by the motel while we were walking to ours. His drunk ass fell in the street and almost got hit by a car. I can't be he's my cousin. LiL Mike
Oh yeah, Monty made out with some 16yr old chick Sun. at the show and her dad (a cop) gave him $10 to get some food on the way home- why doesn't that happen to cool guys? Guess I ain't stupid enough.
Hey Mike, we were sittin around Sat nite before we all left for the bar talkin about the time in Ft. Smith when he made out with that Carrie Underwood chick that won the american idol deal, he needs adult supervision at all times man!
No shit on that one! I guess if we all run around and act retarded like he does we'll makeout with a different chick at every show to. I bet that carrie underwood don't even remember him.
Yeah man I've got a couple of pics of her and one of the guys that used to run with us hugged up on each other in the middle of one of the infamous parking lot drunkfests.....wonder what they're worth nowadays?
How about that award you won Plowboy? That was pretty cool, over 400 cars and your truck is one of the 17 picked for an award!
Too bad I missed it. I was really busy sitting at home, staring at the wall wishing there was something to do. Oh well, looks like a lame time anyway. Ahh, that feels better. Mootz
Before I post my pics I'd like to respond to John Copeland. Who needs ya! We had a blast without you. The only way car shows are cool and stay cool is when people get off their ass and drive, haul, whatever, to the show I want to see all cars nice, rat, project, I don't care. I don't belive in a stupid car show. It was nice to go to a car show that was about people and their cars and not about people and their clothes. I'm just a 26 year old bum, with two unfished customs, just your regular sort of loser, but that didn't matter to anybody at this show. Everyone I met from the hambers to the great ones treated me great like we were friends, no attitudes even from the heavys that earned it. I support the KKOA and always will they've been ariound for awhile. See if Viva still around in 25 years! I'm about ready to cry, support all car shows big or small! Leave the attitude at home and just bring the beer! Thanks to all the people who made this such a memorable weekend (even Cher)! Hey mike, How did all that hair smell because it sure looke good from my angle!
Sooooooo John, I take it you have a problem with KKOA...wonder why that is? Well, I for one, would certainly quit taking a magazine I felt was toilet paper, than again, maybe it's cheaper for you than the real thing... And, of course, I've always been under the assumption that the people that go to events (of any kind) tend to make their own fun...the event itself and all the cars is just icing on the cake. Regardless of your stance on "terrible talent/entertainment and not all that many decent cars", I'm sure you're going to tell us that Jerry's competition does things so much better...but don't bother John...it's not about which organization is better...it's about the people that attend and I agree with Frizbey. If you go simply with the intent to win an award...you should probably stay home...better yet, we're asking you to stay away from every KKOA event from here on out...even if it ever gets moved back to Ohio...and I seriously doubt it will... Out of about 600 cars there, I'm here to tell you there were more than a "few decent cars!" Too bad you have to live with that kind of attitude John. R-
