I have a 454 from an '89 Chevy Suburban in my 58 Caddy. It's all stock except for the fuel system. The oil pan looks stock and I was wondering how many quarts of oil will this beast take?
7 quarts with a filter change is pretty much the rule on a 454. If the Suburban had the engine oil cooler in the radiator it would take an additional quart, but I'm ***uming you didn't use the Suburban radiator. Does it have a dipstick?
It has an after market chrome dipstick that didn't have any marks on it. Id love to find a stock one.
Sounds right for my old '91 2500, the engine from which is sitting in the shed awaiting future employment. I know what I'm going to do with it, just need to get three other projects back on their own wheels first. The oil cooler was not in the radiator, it was a separate piece, and I don't think it and its plumbing would add up to a full quart.
If it has the truck pan, then 7 qts. If someone put a p***enger car pan and pickup on it, then less. here is an idea of what the difference is...
Once you determine if the pan is the truck pan or not, simply change the oil and refill with the correct amount, then take a hacksaw and put a scratch across the chrome dipstick where the full line should be. That will at least give you a ballpark on when it is full. Don
First, you can go to NAPA or Auto-blown *zone* and get a factory-ish sip stick, or the chebby dealer.... whatever's closer to yah. Second, I'd do 6+1 as well, if my memory serves me right from the days o' wrenchin at the Stealership, that's a 7 qt. Beast right there bud.
