Came across a '63 Ford F100 with a Y-block in it. I didn't get any casting numbers while I was there (should have), but I was wondering A) is it more likely to be a 292 or a 312? And B) is it worth having?

    292. I'd think so. How muchie, what condition?
I have a 57 Ranch wagon with a 312 and I'd pick up and old Pick up for the 292.
Also I have a 61 Galaxie and I'd pick up an old Pick up for the 223.

I coulda sworn I read somewhere that the factory never put 312s in trucks..but I'll let better people answer that for certain..

No 312 in trucks. It's a 292. Strong motor with good torque. Not much HP though. They sound great too!!

There were more 312's in Mercury's than T-Birds or Ford's. Seems like anytime you look at a 54 to 62 Ford car the guy says it's a 312.

good to know I wasnt imagining that.. I know the 292 in my 59 sounds great.. and I always heard they were hard to kill.. right now Im debating on doing that T-5 swap and do away with the stock auto trans..

is the 63 a unibody? I know they seem to be getting pretty popular..

It's the engine (and trans, 3-speed toploader) only. Truck isn't for sale since it's in a s**** yard. I've tried to buy various complete cars from this place and they WILL NOT sell. They know they can get $$$ for the parts, then sell the rest as s**** steel and double their money I guess. But I can get the complete engine for right around $300, and the toploader if I want it for right around $175. I've been debating, since I really haven't got anything to put it into. It would be one of those "hold on to for someday..." things.

From what I've read, this is true. It's a 292, the 312's came in the later Thunderbirds (I believe). I'm like 80% sure. At work or I'd throw some more research into it... Check out "The y block guy" - Just google that, it gives you a break down that's pretty specific.

After they came out with the FE engine in 1958 the 292 became the base V8 for cars and light trucks. I don't think they made a 312 after 1957.

Three bills for an unknown Y block is about three times what they really sell for.

That's about what I was thinking, too. It's a really cool-looking engine, with the intake standing way up over the valley like that. I could picture it in an open-front rod all dressed up. I just didn't know if I would be paying too much for it at the quoted price, or if I would even ever get around to using it in something.

I think I'll p***. I'd rather have the Poly-head I found in another yard anyway. I did snake the Hurst "MasterShift" off of the three speed toploader for 17 bucks. Might try to adapt it to my 3-speed Chevy transmission and get rid of the Mr. Gasket POS Universal shifter I'm using now. Thanks everyone! Kept me from blowing even more money on some **** I'll probably never use! Lol

312s were the base engine in mercury until 1960.
