Can anyone decode the following 700R4 code number? I would like to know if I have the year correct and that it is a 700R4 transmission, what make and model vehicle it came from along with what engine it was pared with?
Serial # 9TUM265B on p***enger side bottom rear of the case.
    # 0n white tag/sticker left side of bell housing 9TUM.
Bar code # on white sticker: 619TUM0D2341815.
I believe the 9 stands for 1989 and the M stands for 700R4.

9 is YOM, TU is OEM model it was installed in at factory, M is 4L60, 265 is Julian date of year, B is manufacturing shift. I've no idea what model 'TU' is, hopefully someone else is far more knowledgeable.

  3. The 4L60 and the 700R4 are basically the same ******.

The only thing you need to concern yourself with is:

Does it have a 30 spline input shaft

Does it have an "MD8" or a "K" case

Anything else isn't worth messin' with.

Most junk yards have the Hollander cross over and ID codes book, you can get all the info you need on everything in a car.

ok i didnt ever get the call back on the trans i was going to look at yesterday but just recieved a call on another one this morning. the guy says its out of a 91 gmc, has the MD8 on the case and has 27 splines unless he counted wrong. i was under the impression they were 30 spline after '87 i think. he is suppose to send pictures directly and i want to know if being 27 spline acceptable or should i p***? i dont want to make a 2 1/2 hour (one way) dry run.
    thanks in advanse

ok just talked to him again, the first number in the code is a 6 so i guess its an '86 and has 27 spline. it is an MD8 case. i now it wouldnt be the first choice but is it good enough for a driver?

  9. NO!

You do not want a 27 spline 700R4.

Everything inside a 27 spline is weak!

I would double check the spline count. I have never seen a 27 spline in an MD8 case. I'm not saying it wasn't done, I'm just saying that I haven't seen one.
