If this was an open car, as the reports lead me to believe, I doubt seat belts would have helped in a crash where the car flipped several times. Don't get me wrong, I've been wearing seat belts for 40 years, I just don't think it matters in a situation like this. My thoughts are with the kids and family.

people who arent into cl***ic cars dont understand that they didnt have them. esp yuppys, they get really shocked when you tell them that. i had a cop give me a ticket for no seatbelt in my 60 caddy, i laffed at him when he told me that "the dealer should have put them in".... i got the ticket pulled after my father(whos an ex cop) called him and read him the rule books stating that anything previous to 1963 is exempt. i went and got my license back and all the older cops were laffing and making fun of the newbie cop, i laffed the whole way home... suits him well.

id rather take my chances getting thrown from the car then to eat the dash and stearing wheel or get a door through my side.

From your comments I can tell you are very young. It's a shame you find your seatbelt incident laughable. The police officer was just trying to keep you safe, and for your folks not to encourage you to instal seatbelts in your car is a shame. Satistics prove seatbelts save lives. There is no arguing that point. You have a better chance inside a car then being thrown outside and your head hitting the pavement, getting stuck by another vehicle or a number of other possibilities. Heaven forbid you should have a few broken teeth when you "eat the dash". What about when you eat that asphalt bud??

You have a very good point HLC. You really need a seat belt in an older car because they weren't designed to take brunt of the impact like newer cars are. BUT, you should wear your belt in all of them.

    Something to make you think.

    man that's horrible...just horrible...

First thing I did before when I got my 62 caddy home was order seat belts. Laps in the front and shoulder harnesses in the back. I cart my 4 year old to school and back almost everyday (when it's running) in my caddy...saftey first! My dad refused to wear one for years, I finally told him I would not ride in the car without him putting one on nor would he ever be allowed to drive my son around if he wasn't wearing his seat belt...he wears one now...at least when I'm around!

HOLY ****!!! That car is almost exactly like my grandfather's. He drives his over 3000 miles across the world every year w/o any seatbelts.

This thread shows one of the saddest things that can happen to anyone. It also happened in a cl***ic car. It makes me even more proud to be on the HAMB knowing that NOT ONE member asked what happened to the car! It is true that a great piece of American history is TEMPORARILY lost, but the lives lost are not worth all the automotive history in the world!!

AND for the record... that car is worth well over $500,000 unlike the article stated.

AND... I will be sending a donation the family.

    :(

Very sad and close to home and heart. Being in that biz (restoration) for a couple decades on those kind of cars, I shiver at how many narrow escapes we had. The dip-**** was prolly starin at the thing and not payin attn. And seatbelts or not, there's no way the victims can be blamed in the least. No belts, legal in that one. Running stops, illegal. Case closed, **** him.

It makes us all rethink what's up out there.

Would you lose points in concourse resto sceen if you put belts in your car. If that is true its rediculous or is it ignorant. I've put lap belts in everything I got I dont care I dont feel right driving with out one.

Second if you have to defensive drive in these big vynil or whatever seats. I'd rather stay in the drivers side with all the pedals and fancy stering wheel than be over in the p***enger side wishing I was still driving the car.

Draggin *** that was kind of an ignorant statement even at 21. I'd already had enough dead friends when I got to 18 to know that. Im 29 so not just the babyboomers and our older hambers think so.

I just made out a check for the fund and will have it in the mail tommrow.. This hits really close to home for me.. Both me and my mom drive our old cars every day with out seat belts (i know its dumb) But you best bet ill be going and getting some now... This has really struck a nerve with me and im preety up set. i guess its cause i have to deal with dumb *** yuppies every day in my 50 and there dumb ***'s on the phone and not paying attention. to busy watching dvds and calling on star to tell them the shortest way to soccer practice. I would love it if part of drivers training kids had to drive an old car in traffic and see what its like... cars are to easy to drive and allow the driver not to have to think any more. Just turn whent he navugation tells you to u dont have to look thats what the sensors in your bumpers are for they will beep just before its to late

sorry for the rant but like i said im preety pissed off about this. and i think if charges are not pressed against volvo boy then we should try to do something about it.

Sorry for all the bad spelling and **** im to worked up to pay attention to that.

no joke. When I was about 12/13 I personally witnessed a volvo running a stop sign and killing a neighbor of mine. He was on a motorcycle.

it's one thing to get in an ACCIDENT and kill someone. you know. Like a tire blows or something happens. But to me this is NOT an accident. When you blatantly run a stop sign you are CHOOSING to take the lives of those around you in your hands. This person needs to go to jail for murder. They directly ended and ruined the lives of an ENTIRE family and cost a collect a good deal of coin in a very rare car.....all because they couldn't stop at a stop sign...come on.

If they find out the person was on a cell phone it should be murder.

i dont know if this is desrespectful to ask... but i was wondering how they died exactly? i mean was it the impact of the car snaping there neck, did they hit there head on the door, did they die from hitting the street, or get a part through them??? what exactly killed them?

and for everyone i was talking to before about me not having seat belts in my cars, my 31 ford will have a ww2 fighter harness kinda like a 4 link...

    ATTN: PEOPLE IN HIGH PLACES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it possible to do a HAMB auction to benefit their foundation and not the HAMB. In my opinion, the HAMB donating as a group will benefit the HAMB as much as it will that family.

  22. Oh, man ain't it the truth Django? But for pure ****ing Chicago ****head transportation vessels, nothing compares to BMWs. ***holes who think their "Ultimate Driving Machine" ($399/month lease plan, natch) magically makes them Michael Schumacher with a cell phone.

Horrible, horrible story, my thoughts are with those poor kids.

For what it's worth I see this made national attention it was on the Yahoo news. It appears that this may be responsible for more attention payed to the cl***ic car hobby and concerns that old cars may not be safe enough to drive on the streets. I'm thinking that because of this terrible accident we will all pay the price by the government deciding these old cars are not road worthy.

when i sent in my donation to the family i included a letter suggesting a benifit car show of sorts. And told them i could help get quite a few cars there. Perhaps if other people write in with there donation suggesting the same it could come to be. I know most the gmb wouldnt mind comming out for a good cause and paying a few bucks so people coule be helped out...

And about the thing with the goverment stepping in about unsafe cl***ic cars. I doubt any thing will come to be look at all the other laws they try to p*** against us. There is allwas a po***ion (sp) against them. I think it may affect us (michiganders) at a local leval do to the fact that we have no inspections or saftey checks on older cars.. hell on any cars. If you can put get a vin number for a nascar u can drive it here as long as it has plates.

Johnny Ace and I did the last one, when a Hamber died. I'd be willing to do it again if 1. it's ok with Ryan, 2. you guys wanna come up with some stuff to raffle off.

We got just over a $1000.00 for Jerry's memorial fund.

let me know, and we can get something started if need be.

  28. I have a full 4 point harnesses and twin roll hoops in my modified.

I don't want to be in another crash without them. Other rodders have told me to take them out because they have heard about people who have survived crashes by being thrown from the car.

I spoke to a friend who was a traffic policeman for many years and asked if this urban myth was true. He said it was reckoned that for every 1 who survived by being thrown from the car there were 100 people who had died.

We take our chances in old cars with no crumple zones and can't expect the safety of modern cars - but we CAN fit roll over protection and harness to reduce the risk.
