Hi there. I have always loved the shape of these race cars. I would like to build one with a tuff Y block and have some fun at the salt and other local events. Can anyone please help me with information as to where I can source some body panels like the car pictured below, nose cone, hood, cowl and rear tail section. There must be a fibreglass shop somewhere that makes them. The larger the panels the better as I love the size of the old Indy cars. Is any one building a replica out there? If so, show us! Thanks, -H.R.D-
Check with Josh Shaw right here on the HAMB. He has a package to build an old time sprint car and the Indy car is just a longer version of that. He built one with a flat head in it for his dad and I was lucky enough to get to make some laps at Winchester a couple of years ago and it is a hoot. Roo
Speedway Motors stocks Fibreglass nose pieces, grilles, and a few body parts ... have a look on their website or try their catalog. The old stuff was usually built on Model T style ladder-frames and the bodies hammered from steel or aluminium.
You've never been to this thread? Anything you would want to know about building, restoring, re-poping old sprint cars/ Indy cars can be found there. Hamber 'Trentesept' would probably be the man who knows the sources down in your part of the world. Might shoot him a PM. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=236178&page=929
here's a site with a ton of pics ,articles, etc dedicated to Indy roadsters http://indyroadsters.webs.com/
My other website has a lot of design & build pix of the cars I build. Check it out at: http://macmillersgarage.webs.com/
I have a project for sale over there with my buddy Malcolm Church in Sheppparton, Victoria. 03 58210341. I am ex-Melbourne 6 years ago but live in San Francisco now. We send 3 or 4 containers of stuff to Oz each year. It is much closer to completion than the pics......has both front and rear axles and a correct Schroeder steering box installed. The frame has been stripped, sanded and primered. The project is ex Evergreen Raceway in Seattle Washington near the Canada border, I bought it 3 years ago for a bunch of wheels that came with it. It still has some ORIGINAL panels incl tail and side panels, but has new Speedway Motors nose and hood. It's was built from CAE plans. CAE was a kit manufacturer back in late 50s and thru 60s. You could buy plans or partly built kits like my #14 car shown in pics as-received by my car's original owner/driver Benny Rapp in Toledo Ohio. Contact me at gentlemen.startyourengines@yahoo.com for direct email cos it's easier. Gimme your phone number and I'll call you back cos i have a one-cent per minute phonecard. Jim Grant
There's a guy on the Studebaker Drivers Club forum who is building a replica of a 1932 Studebaker Indy car..... maybe I can get him to post some pix here.
that 1st pic you posted is pretty cool HRDude. I love the track nose on that car....and the intake tubes on the hood. very sexy. As mentioned theres fibreglass noses available ...or you could make your own. I made a buck and shaped one up from there...
Thanks every one for your tips and ideas. Nice work fleet-master. I'm going to do this! Jim, when I get more time, i will pm you. -H.R.D-
I have been creating all the graphics and old decals for an old Rodger Ward Indy car for a client who wants to take the car to the Bonneville Salt flats to try and set a record for these type of cars. The car is being painted and should be ready for the graphics within the next few weeks. Not sure when they plan on taking it to the salt flats. Jimbo
Here is a sprint type car that I built in mid 80s with flathead Mercury engine. Style is early postwar on T chassis and Ford running gear. The body is steel with alum hood and belly pan. It's licensed in Indiana and I dtive it in good weather.
Here is the car, as it left my shop in INDY on June 6. Hopefully it is ready for the decals in the next few days, rather than weeks, as they need to be at Bonneville on Aug 11.
