I have a older 1961 engine that some one put in a kit that repacrd the point.. This kit does not use a electronic control module.

It just replaced the old points and condenser and works ( I think magnetically)

Any way would I be able to run a wire to the neg side of the coil and ground it to stop it (shut the engine off ) Thanks

What does this unit look like? (a picture would help) How many wires are on it (coming out of the distributor?)

Grounding the NEG. terminal on a coil will prevent spark. You can hide a toggle switch somewhere that grounds your coil for anti-theft. The old Borg-Warner Overdrives momentarily grounds the coil for downshifting purposes. Flame Thrower kits do the same thing as well. I wouldn't really recommend that as your only means of shutting off your motor though...

    Short answer... yes.

OK,..... I have to ask.....Why not use the regular ignition switch method to shut down the engine ?

Some coils will overheat if grounded for extended periods with power applied.

Why doesn't it die when you drop the power to the positive side of the coil?

Yep! You could also use the cigarette lighter in your dash to ground out the coil... Anti theft device!!.. ;)

  9. YES. THis is what actually charges the coil (complete circuit). The coil will continue to charge until you remove the ground or shut the + side off. KABOOM...

Instead of a toggle switch I always use a through the dash fuse holder going straight to ground when the vehchle is off put the fuse in it will prevent spark and if anyone looks at the fuse they will see its not blown and put it back in. I've used this anti theft system for yrs.

Not that it matters but a 1961 what? And, why do you want to do it this way?
