I would have enjoyed sandblasting more if I could have blasted more than 1/2" at a time. did an OT Mustang on a rotissierrie. undercairraige and engine compartment.

    never again.

I can see where sandblasting would be more fun if a person had one of the professional units where the sand shoots out like a firehose, but with a Harbor Freight one and a compressor that works hard to keep up it isn't so much fun. All that you can do is an 1/8 inch at a time and you end up with sand down your back and in every orifice in your body, and on a hot, sweaty day that is pretty unpleasant.

I'm with Don on this one. I've done lots of blasting over the years and working with your ass crack loaded with sand has lost some of its charm for me.

I'm not terribly fond of it... mainly cause my blaster is a p.o.s. my little girl however has pretty much claimed my blast cabnet as her own...

  7. Try laying underneath a car for 6 hours sandblasting and then let me know how much you enjoy it. You will have sand in places you never knew existed before though.....

  8. Don't mind using a blasting cabinet. I usually put on my headphones so the co-workers leave me alone, and just zone out. I can completely understand that "being Zen". Open air blasting though, no thanks. I hate the masks, they suck, and make me freak out a little. I need air man.

I like it if there's not a real lot to do. Kind of a Zen thing, I agree. But in the long run, it's knowing that you are doing the best job you can, by stripping off the decades of crud and rust, to make the part look new again, that really does it for me!

I hope you are in mars,pa. yes its a real place and its only like 10 minutes from me. If you wanna hang out Im sure I can come up something for you to blast HAHA. I dont think sandblasting is that bad its definately not on my top ten things to do. But like the OP said its cool when it all done and you know it was all you that did it and you did it right too. Just part of the process.

If you ever had to sand, chip and wirebrush rust for many years and then bought a sandblaster, you thought you have gone to heven!

I love sandblasting with that magic wand. Your mind can wander and day dream and still get your job done perfectly with out effort.

I enjoy the end result but hate doing it. To much grit and dust even in a cabinet.

  17. Probably the only reason you love it is because you haven't done enough of it.:D

Please make sure you use a good quality respirator,,silicosis is something not to be taken lightly. HRP

  18. I had worked at a boat yard in my teens.. used to get the messy jobs. They had a Chris Craft 30' in for a re-powering and I had the pleasure of sand blasting almost anything that came off the old engines. Manifolds, heat exchangers, props, etc. Of course the hood fogs up.. the blast medium cakes up and it's 95* and 95% humidity.

If I didn't have an air compressor that appears to be powered by a pair of hamster lungs, and I lived back in Ireland where summer is typically 60 degrees, sure I'd love it.

But being stuck in Texas and having to wait every few minutes while the tank recharges, I think I'm better strapping some sandpaper to my backside and scooting up and down my rusty metal like a dog with worms.

I don't mind doing it in the winter up here, because you can put lots of cloths on to keep sand from finding every orifice you have. The bad part is that at 10 degs F and colder the static electricity becomes a problem and you end up getting shocked about every 10 seconds. Never mind, sandblasting sucks, but it is one of those necessary evils that is part of the build.

I like it better than alternatives. It's faster and better. But sand ends up everywhere on the driveway. I sweep up for longer than the blasting took.

And I have a good respirator, but sand gets into every other orifice. Thankfully I only need to use it a few times a year.

You must not like Beer, because nothing is better in the Heat than drinking Ice Cold Beer. As for the Blasting I'm glad you like it. It is one of my least enjoyable things. Good money in it, but man it makes me itch.

I agree on both counts. When it's right, it's like re-virginizing metal. When it's not, well, it's one of the worst things you'll ever voluntarily do.

I do a ton of beadblasting at work, it's safe if you use a good cabinet and make sure to use media for for blasting that doesn't contain silica, most will say it right on the container. If you do outdoor blasting, get one of those small breathing compressors and a full head hood, the positive pressure will keep out the dust and the air from the compressor is usually cool and is a great relief trying to blast on a hot day, I've even seen people coil a hose inside of a cooler and then run it to the hood, it's like AC when it's hot out

It's one of the things I really enjoy paying for. I did it one time and learned from there.

One day I'll have to snap a pic of the place I bring my stuff to. That sand is everywhere... and they LIVE on the premises.
