I'm not real ly knowledgable on these ******s, but I'm pretty sure that you need to measure the size of the bearing/bushing on the output shaft to see what the ****** is for. A real good source of info is: http://www.p***onperformance.com/ They know absolutely everything about Chrysler 4-speeds.
It's most likely a New Process NP-440 ... also known as the Chrysler A-833. Different variations of the A-833's were used in Chrysler products from 1964 thru the '80s ... GM also used them in their '81-'86 Chevrolet/GMC half ton pickups and Suburbans. Checkout these web articles: * Chrysler's A-833 (NP-440) four-speed transmission * Mopar 4-Speed transmission decoding * History of the A-833 Transmission EDIT: D'oh! ... I see oldandkrusty beat me to it.

Here http://www.brewersperformance.com/orderinfo.htm and here http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/four-speed-manual.html and from your description, I'd say it's a 77/78 F-body (Aspen/Volare) overdrive version
