Sam's car is pretty cool. Too bad about Chip, though...that apple rolled down the hill and right outta the orchard!!!
Sam and Chip are extremely talented rodders, even though they are into the modern stuff. The only thing I hate about Chips cars is the ****in brutal wheels he puts on them. Not the fact that they are huge and bling, but the fact there's never a proper offset on them!!! They look like FWD wheels!! Whats the point of building a beautiful car and ruining it with the rolling stock
Says it took 23 months to build and the mag date is Aug. 77 so this was built in the middle of the "terrible" 70's! Some people still had "taste" then and some people were still keeping the torch lit, even when supposedly "no one was customizing cars then" Sam has always been one of my favorite builders, even in the 80's when his stuff got more "contemporary" Anyone got pics of that '40 coupe he did with the laid back windshield and two door sedan doors? It was featured in a Hotrod Mechanix issue and is in Tex Smith's "How to chop tops" book.
Sam And Chip are amazingly talented builders and designers. This artical remided me a lot of a car my father chopped and built the ch***is for, a few years back. Mike Bishop (AV8) did an artical about the car for american rodder magazine. Its a lot like Sams car accept instead of stretching the roof, the car was shortend at the rear quarter panels right behind the doors. Notice it still has the rain gutters in tact. Here it is For the full size scans so the text is readable click the pictures above or try these links PAGE 1 PAGE 2 Unfortuantly Gary hasnt finished the car yet or else I would post some other pictures.
Ron, Thank you for posting this article... I have tried ot buy this magazine several times from e-bay no luck so far... a great article on a great car. I always loved Sam his design and metal work... subtile, but very effective. Here are a few pictures of the Sam Foose built 40 Ford coupe with sedan doors with laid foreward B-pillars and laid back windshield. sorry about the small pic Years ago I wondered how that already very nice looking rod would look with a bit more angle on the windshield, pie cut sectioned body, modified wheel openings and a few other mild modifications. My photoshop version is the dark green the original is on the bottom
Man, even with all the hate for Foose, I sure hope I can make it as big as he has. Maybe he prefers cars other than what he designs/builds for paying customers. I did alot of this design, the $550,000 Airflow... but my love is a '56 Safari wagon rolling on chrome steelies and bias whites and a full kustom Barris car with nothing newer than about '52 in it. Foose is a pretty nice guy when you talk to him and with his show and success he turns more kids onto what everyone here digs...Hot rods
