My first project is going to be a Model A sedan (probably a fordor) but my question is what would be the best way to do the gas tank? I'd like to have a cap or door on the side of the car. The best option would be to mount the tank under the body between the frame rails (want to be as safe as possible) has anyone done that? Barring that, would it be possible to mount behind the back seat? Any ideas or pictures of what others have done would be great. Thanks in advance for all your help!
I mounted a 17 gallon aluminum tank from Summit behind the rear jump seats on my 2 door sedan. It is tilted back some and I made a cradle for it. Seats are just big enough to fit my 2 kids in the back.... With that being said I am working on a 52 Chevy as the family ride since I have been scared to death having the little ones riding in the back. Will try to post a picture.
I was able to fit a 10 -1/2 gallon s.s. tank inside the x-member of the frame on my '29 tub project(deuce style frame). For some reason I never took any pictures of it after I finished it.
Nothing wrong with using the stock tank. I've retained the stock tank in the tub as a reserve for trips(the wife and I are driving it to the L.A.R.S. in 2014). I also didn't want to destroy a perfect original tank. Some guys are afraid of getting fuel splashed on them in a wreck, but what are the odds?
I don't have pic yet but i bought a gas tank from a 32 ford truck, (mounts under seat) It has a taper to it so I turned it up on end and fits perfect against the back of the sedan like in Motoandy's pic. I,m going to run the sprout out the back beside rear window. picked it up at swap meet very reasonable.
As for using the stock tank, I'm open to that possibility but i'd like to know my options in case I get a body without one, from what i've heard they're kinda rare to find in good condition. Thanks for the pics and ideas so far, let's see some more!
I had a 15 gallon tank made for my Sedan and mounted it under where the back seat used to be. No more back seat for me, besides it is to damn hard to get back there anyway. Drilled some holes in the bottom of the box I built for ventilation and put a seal around the lid, no gas smell and the tank is good and protected.
Agreed now I am trying to figure out where to put the fuse box Ansen pedals on left and fuel line and shut off on right!
If you use a parallel rear 4 bar then you have heaps of space under the floor and arched over the drive shaft. I got 23+ gallons under the floor on my 29 Tudor. I also like the 32 style gas tanks as long as you have no need for a towing hitch.
Back when I built my '31 Tudor I made a tank that is shaped like the rear seat, and then made a cover to go over it. Lot's of photos and a drawing can be found here: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2740670560103882008fdiplg
I did the same concept as above. A back seat was important to me to have....and so was a gas tank. 13.5gallons and frees up a ton of room in my Tudor, which is a valuable thing to have in any model a.
No problem, exhaust runs under side splash aprons and gas filler is a Granada item welded into the rear 1/4 panel and piped down to the tank.
fiftyv8 I really like the look of yours. Looks very well executed. How much clearance do you have between the driveshaft and the tank? What's the dimensions?
