Ryan fords 1932 roadster -missing forward gears-

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kustom Linez, Jul 30, 2012.

  1. Hi guys, pulled in the drive the other day and dumped the clutch and lost forward drive in all 3 gears but still have reverse? dropped the trans oil and everything looks ok inside, no broken selector fork. any suggestions before I tear it to pieces?

Axle key sheared off? Catches in reverse but not forward. Pop the hub caps and look at the axle nuts, see if there's metal dust.

This. Don't ask me how I know.

  4. I thought of that but there is no noise what so ever when the clutch is released in a forward gear, I have had a broken key before and they make some noise!

Yeah, mine made a pretty nasty noise. Might be worth a look though.

Does the speedometer move in forward gears?

  7. I think I'll jack it up and check the rear hubs.

I got pretty darn good at changing (and straightening!) those axle keys when I had the Peter Beater......Good luck. hope it's something easy.

sheared axle keys do not always make noise when they go, went through my trans in a '40 Ford before checking the keys, they were half the size they were supposed to be - top gone...might be the problem
