I agree completely, the prices are out of control. The thing is.... to see stuff like this.......it's kind of worth it once in a while.
I have always remembered the drag scene from the "The Munsters" show, featuring Dragula, circa '64 or '65. Where did the telephone/hydro poles go, in the background? And the day they shot this was probably a GOOD day for "smog"... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMLZNwezGFY
One of the gas stations my uncle had was on Broadway just down from the bridge. Played on that thing many times. That photo is almost the view you would have had from the back of his station. I think it was the only building on that side of North Broadway for a few blocks. I believe the train yard was part of "Taylor yard".
Hollywood. Art Laboe spun vinyl there starting in 1956, taking requests and broadcasting them on local AM radio. This photo appears to be late '40s, or possibly early '50s.
If I remember correctly, this particular SCRIVNERS was located on the southeast corner of Western and Slauson Aves. It was replaced by a ATLANTIC RICHFIELD gas station.
Here is another shot of one of the Scrivner's Drive-ins from an earlier time. I'm not sure which location this is ... I've seen references to Scrivners locations at Sunset & Vine, Western & Imperial and Sunset & Cahuenga.
Drive-in restaurants were quite popular from the 1920' into the 60's in Los Angeles, based on the number of photographs I've seen. Here are a few more. To the best of my knowledge, Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake is the only one still in business.
This one is back from near complete destruction. Started life as Harveys Broiler in 1958 then renamed Johnies Broiler about 10 years after opening and now Bobs for a few years now. You can't see it this pic, but the Car Port is to right and out of frame of this picture.
Scrivner's had a giant billboard in turn-2 at Gardena Stadium in 1956/1957. Here is Parnelli Jones (#97) in his 1932 Ford sedan. Image taken from a color 8mm home movie.
the photo is taken in the early 70s and I would guess around 1973. How do I know?? I won't say except it's elementary My dear Watson.
Thomas. I believe that the #97 '32 Tudor belonged to Omar Danielson. In those days part of the feature win pay out was a case of Sta-Lube motor oil. Parnelli won enough features in that thing he could have joined OPEC, if OPEC had existed in those days. Mike
in the late 1950s there was Les Bacon and Sons Ford at 1100 Pacific Coast Hwy. in Hermosa Beach. These photos were taken about 1957/58. There are at least 15 station wagons on the lot in the first photo and a T-bird club have their monthy meeting at the lot in the second photo. Does anyone remember the car that Les Bacon hung 60 feet up from a pole as a PR stunt? It was a '54 Ford Mainline and was a fixture along PCH for years.
I found a few photos of the L.A. area while surfing the net. I don't know if they have already been posted but here they are
