  1. I just blew up the pic's and took a closer look! I take back what i said! After seeing the BBQ-grill grill, the frog mouth radius job done on the hood, and duel '59 Caddy taillights.....I'd give the 10k for it!!!! $7500 is a SMOKIN deal!!!

Like I've said before, it's about as traditional as Lady GaGa and this is a traditional board so since it got smacked with the 1986-1987 stick, you're gonna get some shit over that.

My take? I buy what I like to hell with what other people think/like/etc. it's a 4 door, converting it to a 2 door, unless you have insane skills is going to financially skullfuck you past the point of just buying a coupe.

How is the 62-63 year old body that's in Wisconsin under all that shiny paint? How well does it really run, does it run ok around the block or does it overheat after a 15 minute drive?

Do YOU like the way it looks or are you going to turn it into something that YOU like and have you factored the total costs in? A new paint job, removing previous body mods, chrome work.. That's pricey stuff.

If it were me.... If I liked it and the price was right I'd buy it and start a "hey look what I bought" thread. But my sense is that you've got reservations about a) the car and b) if it's what you even really want.

My suggestion? Go with your initial gut instinct.

In the nicest possible way, I have to say that car is reeeally un attractive. A 4 door is no sin, but for 7K there are lots of 4 door Mercs that haven't had all the untastefull modifications. (maybe even a 2 door or two in that price range)

7 grand might not get you a running driving Merc, but it would sure get you something more presentable than that one. Also, 7 large might get you a nice 49-51 Ford, or maybe a 49-54 Chevvie or even something with less doors.

    Good luck, -Abone.

For $7500, you could have some wiggle room to do some more "traditional" work on it like others have said here, and still have a Kool flathead powered Merc to cruise. Plus some of the extras hanging on it are worth some pretty good coin in different parts of the country. I'd buy it if it were closer to me. How many Mercs, 2 or 4 door, are on the road for less than $10K-15K?

  10. If Matt's is for sale around that price, I'd go for that. If you can get the yellow one for $4500 then it's interesting. If you really want the yellow one, the question for me is do you like how it looks or do you want to change it up?

Also it would be great if:
~The side graphics were decals, I'd check
~the visor can come off and there isn't a big wear line where it was mounted.

One of my favorite Merc drivers is the pickle, that's a 4 door. I love the lines of that car.

For the record there is no way I'd advocate buying the banana 4 door at $7500. For that price I'd go with another car.

I'd really look at the problem areas like the tail pan, rockers, see if the repairs (because they will have been repaired by now) is good work.

The hood opening looks really uneven side to side. Note the uneven gaps too. I'm betting it's been gapped with bondo. I'm betting under all that molded pans and grill work are inches thick of bondo. I like the headlights and grille opening though. Cut those pans off, put some chrome on it, and it could be a good looking car.

Look it over especially underside and under dash make sure the chassis looks safe. You might be buying a money pit ,be careful. There is usually a reason for a deal that sounds too good to be true. I would bet it has tons of bondo but hay if you like it and can afford it ,go for it but be prepared to fix problems.

The price is right, and super cool 4-door with suicide doors. Any body mods could be changed if not to your liking, they ain't making these any more. Good luck with your choice. ~sololobo~

The test. Does it make you smile or nervous to think about it in your garage?

Yeah I have to say I'd start with more of a clean slate. Atleast a stocker you wouldnt be ashamed to drive down the street, unless you just like the 80s style customs. That thing is like a car wreck, you dont want to look but you cant help it. Just too much BS to go back and fix.

It's either a smoking deal or it's way over valued,,,i would be skeptical of what appears to be a finished car that you could likely get for 6k

Look at Craigslist Appleton section under 'rat rod'. There's a running, drive it home 4 door '51 Merc for 5k. It looks like it could be a fun cruiser without a lot of work. I have no idea if that's a good price though.

  25. I think it's ugly as poo, but well worth saving. If you can live with it the way it looks then drive the wheels off it and enjoy it.
In my opinion at $7,500 + what it would cost to make it "cool" no. It's not worth it. There are better deals out there.

It took me about 40 years to finally buy a Merc, after falling in love with them as a kid. Now, if I didn't have one, & this one was in front of me, I'd pass...

That could be an awesome merc if you get rid of the lame shit like the continental kit, wheels, paint color, etc.
