Are there any years and models better or ones to avoid.
My Dad has a 94 Mustang with an AODE and he's had all kinds of problems.
Anyone know of a good website for model ID.
I want to hook this up to a healthy 302.

Also what rear gears work well with this tranny.
    Thanks

Look for the early AODs that weren't electronically controlled. They came in lots of mundane cars like early-mid 80s Crown Victorias and stuff. They use a TV (Throttle Valve) cable in place of a vacuum modulator and work pretty good for an overdrive auto.

3.55 to 4.11 gears will compliment an AOD real well in most hot rods.

Ford converted to the electronic type around 1990 or 91, not exactly sure. I have heard that you can get a stand alone computer for the later ones if you go that route. You have to get the cable just right or you can screw the tranny fast, so I hear anyway. I'm thinking about using a 302/AOD in my 56.

yeah the AODE's suck ass. Avoid them at all costs.

The AOD's suck too, but they can be built to handle high horsepower levels.

I went through 5, yes FIVE, AOD's in my old Mustang. It ran high 11's and was a daily driver though. It had a 3500 RPM Stall Converter, Level 10 HD Gear kit, Beefed Clutch Packs, and a B&M Shift Improver kit. Worked great with 4.10 gears, even on the highway.

I think I'll run my spare AOD in my next project since it's not going to be over 250hp. Any more than 250 and I'd just swap over to a C4 to save the costs of rebuilding the AOD several times.

I have TWO Ford trannys here at my place...one came from a T-bird, one from a Cougar. Both had 302's. IF ANYONE WANTS THESE, COME AND GET THEM. They are setting outside now and are FREE for the taking.

If someone can use them, they are YOURS!

I don't know anything about automatics, so I swapped them out for standard trannies.

I guess I'm not adding anything to the post, but just giving a heads up for two transmissions for FREE.

The early AODs will have no wiring plugs on them anywhere. They just have a TV cable.

Both AOD & the AODE have an electrical connector on them.

The AODE has a connector on the passenger side , kinda a "D" shape , several connector pins in it.

The AOD has a connector on the drivers side at the shift arm... it is a neutral safety / back up light switch..... NO electrical connector on the passenger side.

The cross over years is 1992 & 1993 for the Ford AOD & AODE.... either tranny can be in a vehicle .......Look for the connectors!

I hope the visual aids ( photos) appear....

    hope this post helps

Stick with pre '92....Follow the Lokar instructions for pressure settings and it'll live.....up to about 300h.p.

    Thanks guys .
    I`m looking at putting in a 351w with 250 HP 350 torque.
What torque converters have you used?

The car will be used for light towing and lots of hiway travel.

  13. These fellows have done an AOD swap in early Mustangs. Maybe not specifically what you want but there looks to be good general info on this site

Make that three FREE AOD's. I have one here in central KY for free too! Just give me a hand taking it off the 302. It's out of an 82 Continental, and as with most free things no warranty and you get what you pay for:eek: :D But seriously it would be a good builder, it's "supposed" to be good but...

aod will live under high horsepower levels if built correctly...police input shaft, other internal mods...TV cable adjustment is critical...you can burn one up in 20 miles (do not ask me how i know this). Don't have all the answers, however a good ford trans guy can make one stand up to just about anything

I may be picking up a AOD out of a 89-91 Mustang GT.

    Is this AOD electronic ?

Reading back on this post, its sounds like '92-'93 was when they went electronic.

    Can someone confirm this

Get one with out the "E" on the end. I'm installing an AOD with out the "E". There are some rebuild kits out there that adjust for a more possitive shift.
Check out www.transonline.com and www.atsgmiami.com. I recommend shift kit SK AOD-H to correct some issues and the 1980-91 AOD (010-203) Tech Manual from ATSG if you are going to rebuild it yourself.
    Good luck.

The 89-91 is not electronically controlled. It MUST have a TV linkage or cable properly hooked up, though.

Make sure you also get the plug for the neutral safety/backup light switch.

Actually they do - it's just for the neutral safety switch and backup lights.

Try to get a '92 as they had the best clutch pack setup of all the trannys. There is also the ability to swap the E4OD low gear set into the AOD (Which I'm planning to do for my P/U) - this lowers first gear 15-18% (if I recall - don't have the number in front right now) - really wakes up the first gear acceleration.

I'm new to these trans too, but I have one in the garage... What is it about the TV cable misadjustment that will kill them?
