I wish I would have known about this a week or two ago. I would have made arrangements. Unfortunately I'm already commited to race a nostalgia event at Lancaster Dragstrip/Dunn Tire Raceway Park. Perhaps next year, with a little more notice.
Hey Old Soul. Next year you'll have to keep your eye on this one and give us a month or so heads up. Too late to attend this year, but I will give 'er a try next year. VR&C.
Im sorry guys. I just found out about this show. Some one posted the flyer awhile ago. But accidently posted it in the intro bored. South ****ler Is above syracuse and way east of rochester on the lake by red creek and wolcot. Kinda hard to explain. But theres a drag strip there thats been there along time.
It is good to see you in the race.... If you won the race then you can gat many sponsors for appraisal. Cl***ic car appraisal is also a good choice.
Didn't they do this in the past... like a while ago in the past? I heard good things about that one. Old Drag strip with gr*** down the middle? A bunch of Hot Rodders from out by me went to it. Rockabilly Music and Hot Rods. Doesn't Get Much better than that. Unfortunately i Will be attending the Sunday Niagara Nostalgia Drags in Lancaster NY at Dunn Tire Raceway Park this weekend. If this happens again next year post it earlier, there is far too much going on in the summer to go to it all! A lot of WNY guys go to the Sunday Niagara Nostalgia Drags this same weekend unfortunately though.
The old South Butler track, which is/was on a working farm, did have a gr***s strip running down the center. The original ashphalt was laid in 1957 and the track operated as the Savannah race track from then until around 1968 or so. It was opened up again for a couple of runs a year for 2 or 3 years. There was a serious accident and the place was shut down for good. It was pretty cool while it lasted. The South Butler "track" that's the subject of this thread is a few miles away from the original. The owner tried to have an "event" once a year for 2 or 3 years and I heard he p***ed away and the event didn't reoccur until now or last year, I guess. When I was there a few years ago, the "track" was nothing but a couple of dirt paths they had cleared with a tractor or dozer or ????. It was really just a small get together in a big field. Don't know if there were any improvements made the last few years, but I'd doubt it.
TagMan, Thanks for the info. I remember hearing about the accident and it being shut down. Good to know they are trying to do it again. Wish I could make it out to the event, sounds like they can get a good thing going again. Does anyone know if the car show is limited to a certain year and older?
South Butler is a couple miles north of Savannah NY which is seven miles east of Clyde, NY. both Savannah & Clyde are on the Erie C**** halfway between Rochester and Syracuse on Route 31. The original strip ( not the one this thread references which was never an operating strip as far as I know) was built by Paul Jackson in 1958 and operated as Jackson Dragway and later, in 1966, sold to Jake King who operated it as Kings Dragway. I raced there often in the mid- late '60's. It was a real cow pasture but man did we have fun. Quarter mile with hills and valleys, concrete launch pads with a two light tree, short paved shut down turning into dirt with a dirt return road. Last season was 1977. Terry
Agreed. NY is starting to have some pretty cool Hot Rod Shows now though. Check out the ******** Happening in LeRoy NY, pre 62 Traditional Hot Rod Show http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=715524 And the Empire Nostalgia Gold Cup G***er Race, should bring that cool 55 g***er in your avatar out to it Old Soul! haha http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=8021292#post8021292
Isn't there something going on in Jack's Reef either today or tomorrow, too? I got a flyer at one of the car shows for it and it's probably somewhere in the van yet. South Butler I drove by once, it's really out in the middle of nowhere. There was a gas station that still had mechanical pumps out front which looked like they dated to the '60s. Both in design and in condition. Trying to google up the location, I hit a bunch of stuff that the old original track is being operated on some kind of limited basis, or at least was a few years ago. Just two strips of ashphalt on someone's farm by the look of it.
Really? Wicked Bummer, I was hoping they could make it into something. Well first few years of trying to do something are always a bit slim, hopefully they can make it better. Got Any pics? Was there a year limit on cars, or was it kind of like whatever shows up can do burnouts? The pics from past years looks pretty good.
Nobody showed up it just plain ****ed. It was a waste of time. The should have advertised it way more.
