Hello fellow hambers, well got a question for you all, I'm currently working on a buddys OT car (66 mustang) and we put a new down pipe on it which is 1 3/4". So now were trying to figure out how we should finish it off. Any recommendations on what muffler to use, or maybe do stright pipe? Were looking for somewhat the "muscle car" sound...u know, deep mean sound. He's currently driving it with just the down pipe and at idle and when u rev it up it sounds nice but its just too loud when driving it. Any suggestions? And its a stock manifold, stock motor. Not upgrades. Thanks for the help!
The best sounding exhaust I've heard was on a Falcon. He had the split header going into chambered mufflers like Flowmasters and then into gl***packs. It had a nice deep idle, and the gl***packs kept the revving nice and smooth sounding. The guy has a web page that had his build on it, I couldn't find it. It was a dark blue Falcon convertible, real sharp.

Man, i hate the sound of duals on a six, personally. I much prefer a larger diameter single on these. To that end, what I have done with my girls '62 Falcon wagon with a 200 is as follows. I went with a '69 and later manifold with a 2" outlet, grabbed a couple of 2" u-bends and some straight exhaust tubing and built a single down the p***enger side that terminates in a 30" "Cherry Bomb" gl*** pack. Nice and mellow at idle, but sounds nice and deep and throaty at speed, all while being tollerable too. Plus it added a bit of power over the stock stuff.
My 65 Falcon was an unfinished project when I got it and came with a Clifford dual out header. I scabbed in a dual exhaust using 1 7/8 but it was super hard to route duals in a Falcon convert due to the torque box design. The drivers side pipe hung too low and there were rattles where it was tight to the floor. I understand the Mustangs were a little different and easier to do duals. I used Smithy gl***packs mounted just forward of the rear bumper. It had a throaty rumble and was fairly loud. I got lots of compliments on it, and many had a hard time believing that it wasn't a V8. Personally, I thought it sounded like a stern drive boat with a V8, that sort of gurgling sound. Not really that pleasant sounding, but certainly a unique sound from a car. We took the car on a 3000 mile vacation, and one of the mufflers fell off south of Seattle where the I5 is not very smooth. All the jarring and bouncing of an old car doing 75 running door to door 3 lanes wide, finally took its toll, and away went the muffler, and to the nearest off ramp we went, guided by our gps to the nearest muffler shop. I had the guy there cut out all the **** that I had installed, and put a Y pipe to bring the header collectors into one 2" pipe, through a magnaflow copy muffler. It quieted it down slightly, and got rid of that boat sound. Long story short, I wouldn't bother with a dual system on a 200.
