Privately-Owned Helicopter Crashes En Route To Alpena

    POSTED: Monday, September 26, 2011
    UPDATED: 5:18 pm EDT September 26, 2011

ALPENA, Mich. -- A representative from a southeast Michigan stamping company confirmed to Local 4 on Monday that its vice president was one of two people who died in a helicopter crash over the weekend.Dan Logghe, 46, was part owner of Logghe Stamping Company, which is based in Fraser. He and an employee died when their helicopter crashed in a wooded area of Alcona County.Michigan State Police relatives of Logghe reported him missing after he failed to return from a trip to Alpena on Friday."He left Friday, probably early evening. I guess it was normal for him to go up to his place Up North and spend the weekend and be pretty much out of communication, hunting and stuff like that," said Sgt. Gary Nesbitt, of MSP's Richmond Post. "When he didn't come back last night or this morning, they became worried."The Robinson R-44 Helicopter was registered to the Logghe Stamping Company. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

We ran an M+M clutch flite in a c/d in the early 70's worked great.

Did you run a single disc slider?

All I have left from the ClutchFlite days is a tackle box of various slider clutch finger weights - bolts, nuts, bushing weights - in both aluminum and steel.

If I still had it I'd be using it. Boy howdy I learned real quick not to kill the engine going through the lights. Rear tailshaft bushing siezes to the driveshaft from lack of lubrication stopping the rear slicks RIGHT NOW!

Now that the racing season has ended I had time to make some upgrades to the Logghe car:

A new oil pan - the old one was too close to the ground and hit a few times. I added a baffle and trap door to contain oil on decels.

A stud girdle for the Schneider roller cam

And I reworked the leaky Jabsco Mini Puppy coolant pump. The shaft seal was worn out and leaking. No replacement seal is available. So I took a valve stem seal that had the same size hole as the pump shaft, made an arbor on the lathe to hold it in alignment and ground down the OD to fit snugly in the pump housing.

I also reworked the advance plate on the Mallory dual point distributor, taking out about twenty degrees of centrifugal, so now it idles good and revs up quickly.

I look forward to next season's nostalgia racing dates.

Me and my brother restored my MG to as close as it can be to 1964 when I went to the track with it. It is updated some but cosmetically looks like it did when raced in the 60s. NHRA says no quicker than 11.00 sec. so 11.00 it is, we enjoy the hell out of it and everyone that see's it thinks we took it out of the garage after 45+ years.

3rd Dover race 2011. MG vs Bad News 1964 The Bad News C/A truck is exactly restored and is only for static display.

I took The Last Logghe altered to the Detroit Dragway Reunion race at Milan last week. It went straight but shot ducks all the way down. By the end of the day I had increased the jet area by 29% and it still had not cleared up. The eighth mile times were in the 6.43 range (which equates to a 10.0x so I'm in the ballpark of my ten-flat target window) but it would only run 10.60s with the missing and the popping so I split the difference and dialed a 10.29. Went three rounds like that. Next step is jet extensions and float level changes. Such fun. The grandkids liked it too.

    I found my misfire:

I had earlier used 8 mm wires on the vintage two-piece Mallory cap that was designed for 7 mm wires. They did not seat fully in the terminal sockets, leaving a large gap to be jumped inside the distributor. It was OK at idle and during burnouts but when I poured the coals to 'er it wouldn't handle the increased cylinder pressures and started dropping cylinders. Hopefully we're good to go. Next race: ONDR nostalgia race July 6,7,8 at Grand Bend Ontario, Canada.

Thanks Carl. Before I race it again I plan to convert the head from 18 mm plugs to 14 mm plugs.

Hi Luke, I will not be coming to the Gold Cup race as I have a points race in Michigan that weekend with my "fast" S/P bracket car (avatar).

Sure, I'll get some close-up photos of the rear suspension. Originally it came from Logghe Stamping with ladder bars, but because it was such a wheelstander I added an additional front boss and converted it to a 4-bar setup. That is why the 4-links are so long. I've kept the ladder bars and they can be retro fitted if desired. The car uses coil overs and a sliding wishbone centering device. I also added a bolt-on anti roll bar of my own design to add some roll stability.

    Hey there Greg:
OK dont laugh to hard. But did a quick smudge of what I think your bars are looking like.
How does it handle now with respect to how it was with the Ladders?
Intersect point with this new set up ,moved forward a bit.
With all the history you have with car you must have an excellent baseline.
What Lb springs are you running?
It is what it is , correct?! I dont see any adjustment.
Like I was saying to you. I have to change what I have. Have no experience with 4 link. Just Solid.
Sorry to be a pain just like to study things.
    Thank you Greg
    Luke

  22. I wish you well in your restoration project. When I built the F-Troop Willys in 68, NHRA wouldn't let us race it as a AA/GS due to the chassis design. We ended up racing it as a fuel coupe in 69. 35 or so years later NHRA certified it at 7.50 which is a little quicker than it ran in 69. No one ever expected those chassis's to be raced 30+/- years later. Think of the stress those tubes took when we shoved 3-4,000 HP at them. .065 wall 4130 tubes. Some racers ran water thru the tubes for engine coolant.
Rust? Not being judgemental, just something to think about. Jay Howell

    Hello Jay,
Thanks for the input. We met years ago when you were into racing - at Logghe's or Ramchargers, I've forgotten now - and I hope all is well with you. You ran some marvelous cars and I've often wondered if high profile racers like yourself know that fans follow your expliots closely.

Regarding racing older chassis cars: yes, I worry more about the integrity of the car in the lane next to me and the condition of his parts than about my own car. I know the history of every single pass in this car and every modification done to it and that it is in the best condition I can make it.

I was delighted when Steve T restored the F-Troop car. He pulls it with my old motorhome. It was one car that inspired me to build my own Willys coupe.

On a different note, I'm eyeing a 16 ft Hobie to start spending time on Lake Erie.

    Breezes at your stern, buddy,

  24. RE: "You ran some marvelous cars and I've often wondered if high profile racers like yourself know that fans follow your expliots closely". Thanks for the kind words. As I've often said "It was the best of times". I have no idea of anyone following my exploits or antics. LOL! Sailboat days have ended and RV days have arrived. If I was going to race again, I'd love to do another Fuel Coupe. The F-Troop Willys was the most fun, most exciting, and most challenging hot rod I ever had the pleasure of creating and driving, however it would most likely be a nostalgia NFC, but those days are over for me. It's up to you "young guns" now. You all enjoy your rides and be safe. I try to keep up with you young guys "exploits".

This upcoming weekend (Saturday) is the Nostalgia Drags at Milan Dragway in Michigan. I dolled up The Last Logghe with some graphics for the event. We'll be there Friday (T&T) and Saturday to have some fun!

This Saturday, May 11, 2013 I will be racing The Last Logghe at The Detroit Dragway Reunion Race at Milan along with the Billetproof car show. My wife is driving our '33 Willys coupe too, barring any threat of rain.

Boy am I getting lazy. I'd forgotten what a pain it was to run one of these older cars - charging the battery between rounds, changing the water every pass, etc. So I had already added an alternator (an alternator putting out 30 amps at 14 volts = 420 watts output; ONE HP =746 watts - small price to pay even at 50% mech. efficiency)

Now I'm adding a radiator so my bride won't have to drag me back form the end of the strip. Maybe with a pancake fan in there I can even Round-Robin it.
