So jazzbum where did you hear this responsibility to maintain an old car? Another "law" I missed? Then you had better not get caught pulling an engine to transplant, or a transmission/ rearend. Better leave those disc brakes and steering gear where you found it. I'm sure there is a restorers board somewhere on the internet but I hope this isn't one. Only rule to remember, "anyone can restore and old car. It takes a real man to cut one up. Can I get an "amen"?  :D

My father had the Edsel line in his merc dealership....Edsels sucked from day one. A perfect example of what NOT to build.....ugly...not dependable...and zero performance.....let's crush all of em. It's too bad Henry Ford wasn't a good ol boy from the south....then maybe the car would've been named after his OTHER son (the ugly bucktoothed one)...Billyray Joebob....a much more appropriate name.

JUNK IS JUNK...unless it's ugly junk.

Now a Checker....THAT'S some primo hotrod material....gimme a fuckin break....they wouldn't even make good coke cans.

you dont have to restore a car to maintain it. fact is, even if you chop it, put a different motor in and what have you, its still around. nobler in my opinion than crashing it up just so a bunch of dorks can whack their puds off to it.

    Here...Here...well said Frank....

.....and by the way what is so friggin' bad about EDSELS I own a 1959 Ranger and it is one of the coolest cars I've ever had.
It sure stands out from all the other belly button projects or asshole projects people have...they are just like everyone else has they just change the paint and/or interior....some are belly buttons like everybody else's and some are assholes like everybody else's...only difference is they stink.

so I say quit shootin' down Edsels and just build your crap.

Make that argument to a group of die-hard restorers... I bet consensus is that you ruined a good car when you cut it up.

My point is simply that somebody, somewhere, will always have a better idea of what you should do to an old ride. I don't understand how demo'ing old cars could make these guys happy, but I'm not gonna judge 'em... just like I don't want a bunch o' non-rodders telling me I ruined a car when I built it how I wanted. To each his own...

As per the question on rice derbys. Dixie Speedway in Woodstock GA north of Atlanta Has a 4 cyl derby several times a year. I entered a Saab one time in a 4 cyl derby in Tenn. did fair 2nd. The car of choice around here for the derbys is a 74 chevy impala. The locals pay 500 to 700 less motor. I have sold a lot of them. If they were not used for derbys I would pull the engines and crush. When I ran Imperals in derbys the transmission case was the weak link. it would break so I always installed a 305 chevy {runs cooler thick cyl walls} and a 350 trans. I am now sorry for some of the neat cars I have runied but at the time they were only old cheap piles of shit. Plus the were avaiable. The money was nice many times the winnings would fininace parts for the race cars. I am now preparing 3 crown victorias {I like them better than the chevys} for customers for the fall derbies. Blue oval men. plus the pay is good.and I get the cars back to part out. The best demo cars I ever ran were 49 to 52 chevys. The clutch linkage is set up so it never comes loose and the old six pulled so good you could rock the car and get loose from a tangle. some I destroyed were 54 buick 54 olds 55 and 56 cads several 49 to 52 chevys 56 chev,68 elcamino,58 60 61 62 imperals 74 plymouth station wagon 74 impala wagon 62 ford 58 ford 55 ford. like I said these were junk semi late cars all this was in a time span between 1961 and 1984... Later... Bobby..

I thought demo derbies (and figure 8 races) were cool until I was about seven years old. Then I saw one of the first cars that I ever really wanted, a 56 Dodge two door. It was at the Fulton County Fair in Lewiston Ill. and it was all ready for the demo. Needless to say, it was smashed to pieces.:( I've disliked demos since then. BTW, there's nothing wrong with Edsels. I'd much rather see an Edsel driving down the road than a Honda, or a Geo. Those guys are jackasses. It's their cars, and they can do what they want with them, but they are still jackasses.

What about all the old dirt track cars, where they used to smash the shit out of each other... all those old 30's coupes that were worthless and plenty of them. Now people are rebuilding coupes that are missing the bottom 1 or 2 feet of metal. Yeah, edsels and imperials are fairly common now, but what about 30 years from now? Just something to think about.

  11. its wrong and BS...they need thier knee-caps blown out w/ a saw'ed off Shottie. Maybe all the cars will blow up on the first hit and wipe them out.

i guess i'm the only one that doesn't care. i don't like any of the cars listed anyway.

"aqua Edsel, 1964 Checker cab, a 1965 Plymouth Fury, a '63 and '64 Cadillac, several 1963 Ford Galaxies, and a 1964 Dodge station wagon, among others"

    c'mon... ya'll really like those???

What would be really cool is if they just had a bunch of rednecks out there in the arena fighting to the death. Get about 50 of them, throw in a bunch of random weapons...like garden rakes, a lawnmower, a ballbat, etc....and say GO! the last one standing wins.

Now I'd PAY to see that.

Ahh the good old days of the Roman empire. NOBODY knows how to do anything entertaining now days.

EDIT: oh yeah, and '63 FORD GALAXIES ROCK...you dumbass. Those are certainly worthy to be saved (at least in principle). Those particular ones may be shit, but a '63 Ford is pretty cool anyway you look at it.

  16. Enough beer and I'd fix up this '50 Ford woodie to demo derby it just to piss off all the assholes that have offered me like pennies on the dollar for it. Here's your $300 you (expletives deleted)...

So I can see where some of these guys are coming from. Still, an Imperial would kill pretty much any other car out there, although I have seen some others come close and win outright. Back in the day the big deal was a '57-'58 Merc. Around here those things are so rusty they break in two when you move 'em. Be funny if one of these split in the middle and they had to cut a guy out and take him to the hospital. Have seen that before, like the derby some idiot ran a K-car against the full size tankers. Not to mention once a '73 Catalina 4dr that the frame was so bad on that after a couple hits the car had accordianed itself a good foot shorter - across the back doors of the car.

Look at it this way, for each one they mess up the rest get a little more rare and worth a few dollars more. You'll still be able to find one for $100-$500 if you look a little.

WOW now Ive heard it all...a rusty piece of shit car is more important than a PERSONS well being.(hope the car folds in half and he needs to get cut out and sent to the hospital) Give me a fucking break. Glad to see peoples priorities in order.

The difference between this shit and the "hot rodders ruin cars" argument is that a car that's been chopped up and made into a somewhat different car is still a car that can be used and enjoyed. Sometimes someone will get a nice car and then completely fuck it up because he doesn't know what he's doing, but at least he wasn't trying to destroy it out of pure malice.

What's going on at this demo derby is a bunch of guys trying to show off by destroying the nicest old car they can. The guy with the most valuable, rare, or desirable car wins whether his car dies in the first 10 seconds or not. It's a complete waste.

People need to keep things in perspective. In 1950, a '32 Ford was just a slow old car with a lousy ride and a cramped interior. I bet some rust and a stuck engine was a good reason to crush one back then.

They're not making any classic cars anymore and they never will again, and in my opinion any part of any old car isn't worthless until it's REALLY destroyed. Letting something sit in a field where it'll probably be very valuable to someone years down the road is a lot less selfish than smashing it right now for a few minutes of fun.

.....maybe an "al quieda" themed demo derby? hmmmm....get a bunch of old mercedes benz's and pack the back seat areas full of about 400lbs of dynamite...each.

....now I'm betting THAT would be entertaining.

  21. I'd pay to watch it:p especially if the halftime show was to include the guy who sponsored the "smash the classics" derby tied to a burning pole in the middle of the arena....or put on public display in some sort of scenario worthy of being on the movie "saw"...I bet he'd cut off his own schlongenballz to catch a dollar bill blowin in the wind....

I would rather see this demo derby, than go to a car show and look at trailered cars owned by egomaniacs.....at least the derby is using them as cars, not jewelry.

What the FUCK! I'd be up for a little fist to face conversation with those guys. Even if the cars are total rust heaps, the lest they coud do is take off all the hard to get stuff. Asswipes.

really no different to what happened to anything after a 36 coupe here in Australia, they all saw their time on the speedway tracks, as back then they werent a cool car,

but it is stupidity, I think some of the contestants didnt have their seat belts on when they took the first hit...

This is wrong it's a stupid waste of time and tin. I'm sure that because these cars are running there are people on this board who would enjoy driving the wheels off of them

My daily driver is an 81 Elcamino has been in major wrecks twice, every piece of tin on it other than the roof, 1door and a quarter panel have been replaced atleast once but for some stupid reason i still drive it. It should have been scrapped a long time ago, but why it still runs and drives good. These people are just wasting good drivable tin. I wish i had the cars and spare time they do.

-but who am i to talk 20 yrs ago my dad was on a crew that raced a 57 chev bel air 4 dr post in Nascar Now try to find 57 chev parts around Snohomish Co. WA

there's a fairly solid 63 riviera in the hamb classifieds for sale not TOO far away from me, for a few hundred, i think i should buy it and demo it. the owner has tried selling it here many times now, and no takers, he's about to crush it, but then I'D be the bad guy if i bought it and smashed it and i'd have tough guys threaten to smash my face in instead of THEM buying the car and doing something productive with it themselves.

what gets me is how many of you feel YOU have the authority to dictate what someone else can do with their rusty piece of shit car, to the point of threats of violence and harrasment, but would yourselves go completely apeshit if, say the government tried to regulate YOUR car.

oh, and it's Aleister Crowley.;) not to be a spelling nazi or anything.
