Ford Maverick 8" rear install

I am putting this rearend (48" between hubs) in my 36C T.
Would anybody have a pair of Maverick rims 15" 5 lug 4.25" spacing to fit this rear?
I have been finding out most steel rims have scrapped!!!
Know any other appilcations or an extra set?
Curious to know what the factory offset is for the Maverick or MustII that used this rear end?

 

The only DEPENDABLE measurement for a rear axle width is the wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface (aka WMS).....it seems this backing plate to backing plate measurement idea will just not die.

With varying width of brakes/drums and backing plate offset, that dimension is almost useless for any degree of accuracy.

If you start with WMS to WMS, and figure what you want for tire to bed clearance, you can figure what wheel offset you need to get where you want to be. Or, conversely, if you start with wheels/tires, you can easily figure how wide (WMS to WMS) the axle needs to be to get there.

As for 4.5" wheel bolt pattern, lots of Ford models, lots of Mopars, AMC and Studebaker used that wheel bolt pattern, so your choices are greater than just Maverick and Mustang. I don't recall ever seeing a stock Maverick with 15" wheels. Not to say there weren't, just don't remember seeing any and I worked in a Ford store in that era.

Mavericks didn't come with 15" wheels. Look at Mopar wheels at lot more of them came with 15".

 

Hnstray is correct. WMS to WMS is the number to know. FYI, the WMS to WMS measurement of 1969-1977 Maverick rears is 56.5 inches. Look here: www.carnut.com/specs/rear.html

It seems most local salvage yards srapped these for the steel

Maverick rears have a 4-1/2" bolt pattern.

 

I suggest calling Wheel Kid and buying NEW wheels ... with the offset you need.

Take a look at Rangers and Jeep CJs for other usable wheel choices.

 

NOT CJ's.......they are 5 1/2" bolt circle. YJ ('87 thru '95) and TJ ('97 thru '05) and Cherokee XJ and early Grand Cherokee (pre '99) are 4 1/2" bolt circle. Dodge pickups up to approximately '90 are 4 1/2" bolt circle too. Later are 5 1/2".

Edit: DUH on me!! thought about this later and belatedly remembered almost all of the steel wheels on Jeeps of this era are 'styled steel' and not useful for this application.

 

Anybody know what model my rear end came from? Its 4.25" between studs?

 

To accurately measure a bolt circle diameter, you measure across the center of the axle/hub. On even numbered stud patterns, i.e. 4, 6 or 8, it is a direct measurement from center to center of studs 180* from one another.

On odd number patterns, typically 5 (but there are 3's), you measure from the CENTER of one stud, across the center (as near center as possible) of the axle/hub to the OUTSIDE of the other stud. That makes up for the odd studs not being 180*. By employing that method, I think you will find your studs are 4.5" pattern if, in fact, it is a Ford rear axle.

You cannot find out with that measurement. LOTS of Fords have a 5 on 4.5 wheel bolt pattern.

Look and see if the identification tag is still on the rear end.

5 x 108 equals 5 x 4.25". I see Tbirds and Taurus(es)- but is the Taurus FWD?

 

That is a very clear explanation. No offence to the OP, it is very surprising to me that this and the WMS, hub face, is fairly confusing, or unknown by many people. Great description on this and the whole hub face, WMS explanation.

Yes when I measure from outside one stud to center of one across it is aporox. 4.5"

Yep!! My dad's old '72 yellow "GRABBER" came with 14's also...

 

try Summit Racing in Cleveland. I just purchased 2 Wheel Vintiques series 12, 15" x 8" 4" backspace rims for my '34 with an 8" rearend. $68.95 each. $11.95 shipping per pair UPS delivered them in one day. They are straight and true wheels. I couldn't find stock rims with these dimensions so I went with Wheel Vintiques. I have the same style wheels on the front only in 14" x 5" size. HTH

 

Find a good wheel bolt pattern database if you want to go used/junkyard. Some Toyota wheels will fit.

 

Also the 15" steel wheels from late model Crown Vics still have the 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern common on Police and taxis.

 

front wheel drive GM cars are 5x4.5 also, lot of strange back spacing available

 

Crown Vic's, Lincolns, big Merc's, light duty F-150's and various other makes have 15 inch 5 on 4-1/2 steel wheels and the U-Pull-It yards usually have a good selection.

Just make sure you get matching rims, sometimes they are mixed up on the cars.

Also, watch as some of the rims don't have the bumps for small caps.

Even getting rid of the tires they're pretty cheap.

 

I just re-measured my 77 Maverick rear end bolt pattern and it is a 5 x 4 1/4. Also the wheel cylinders on a 76/77 are 15/16 instead of 27/32 on the previous years. Wish mine was 5 x 4 1/2.

 

Better re-re-measure, Maverick 5 lug is 4-1/2" bolt circle.

 

Maybe I am reading it the wrong way?

 

Center of one hole/stud to the OUTER side of another hole/stud. Your measurement shows 5-on-4-1/2".
