327 for 500 dollars would be worth while to put in a car

Not a dang thing probably. I have boats and many rods and have pulled motors and swapped to and fro.

I sold a houseboat recently with two marine Ford 351's. They both turned the same direction. My neighbor's boat had twin 427's. They also turned the same direction. ON the other side he had twin 454's...in a 35 foot pencil racer...yea...same direction. if your 327's are out of a houseboat they probably turn the same direction.

You sure it just wasn't the PROP that counterspun? Have many buddies that race boats, have seen many where the prop spins counter, but the motors tourque the same.

My brother-in-law recently got a 60-something Criscraft with a 327. It is reverse rotation. Apparently not everything spins in reverse. Obviously the crank goes reverse, as does the starter, but the cam and distributer dont. There is a gear on the crank and one on the cam that mesh directly with eachother, unlike being connected by a chain that makes them both spin the same way. I dont think you can interchange cams though, I believe the fire order is different as well

  9. they are junk...i'll come take them off your hands for free! Actually from what I remember about chevy boat engines they usually have good heads on them and are very good performers. Take 'em and don't look back:D

as chopndrop said, some are reverse rotation.

another thing often overlooked is the piston/cylinder clearance in marine applications is larger than in cars because boats tend to have lower running temps. I've seen as much as .008 in blown high horse boat engines. you might risk breaking a skirt at that kind of clearance in a car.

And don't overlook saltwater corrsion if it ran seawater cooling, or cracked blocks from not being drained properly. There is a bunch of those 427 ford blocks with a repaired crack in the lifter galley.

If from a twin inboard then more likely to be counter rotating if from an inboard/outboard both wouth spin the same , the drive would be where the counter rotation would take place

To change from counter rotation you have to replace the cam, timing assembly (gears and chain instead of 2 gear drive), distributor and starter. Crankshaft is the same, seal surface isn't knurled. FWIW on engines with a knurled seal surface the knurl is reversed on reverse rotation cranks and will leak if you don't use the right one.

  14. I worked on some chris craft inboards in the early 70's that had a reversed rotation . I had to swap camshafts and distributors to correct the rotation when we replaced the engines. Carlg

I just built a 427 thst was a reverse rotaition marine motor. I only used the block, but I do know the cam and dizzy are different, some motors that have directional grooves on the main seals will be the wrong direction. Oh, mine had a crack in the deck between the 7 and 8 cyl. that required welding and a sleve.

How were the engines mounted? If they were mounted backwards meaning the front of the engine bolted to the trans make sure you check to see if the crank was drilled thru for trans oiling. If so make sure its got a bolt in it or !~!@#$% yup oil all over after you get it in the hot rod ! OH YA I know.

Guaranteed the motors are counter rotating, however pick the right genius and there is only a couple of parts changes, as the thread sez.........

Also boat motors are work motors made to run hours at steady rpm akin to always pulling a heavy trailer up hill in low gear (boats don't need brakes)

Also if salt water cooled they will be corroded but could be fresh water cooled block with salt water cooled exaust this was the setup.....
