hey, i just picked up a 65 riviera for the summer, decent shape with low miles. my brother's been using it for about 2 weeks and on his way over to my house today he started getting a clicking noise in forward gears and he says it didnt shift after 30 mph( not sure if that would be second or third). the noise sounds like when you would stick a baseball card in the spoke of a bike tire. when we first picked it up i noticed a similar noise in reverse, but it was intermitent. i figured something loose that only made the noise in reverse, but now i think it may be related. i dropped the flywheel cover and the torque converter and flexplate both look brand new, but everything else outside looks like it wasnt touched in a while. the fluid looks brand new too. i dont want to drive it too much in case it damages something, but i really have no clue what it could be.
check your U Joints......they can make such a noise...... On the upshift issue, make sure the hose to Vacuum Modulator on the pass side is hooked up and has actual vacuum to its end at modulator.....
U-joints usually noisy at very low speeds when they go bad. A noise like that at speed I would look at the governor first, especially with an up-shift symptom. Look at the modulator line anyway, the rubber connection pieces are prone to rotting out. Bob
ok, so after doing the maintenance i planned on anyway for today, i got under it while on and figured out the reverse noise being the exhaust hitting the floor. i thought i got lucky, but after getting the car warmed up its doing the same thing in forward gears. it clicks when commin to a stop, sometimes clicks when leaving from being stopped, and if it does that it doesnt want to shift unless i put it in neutral and rev the engine a little, which makes me think vacuum issue. it got late on us and a lightning storm is coming so im done playing for today. thanks for the responses
As mentioned check vacuum line but you may want to check the governor on the passenger side under the cover with four bolts
