Picked up this car and was told that it might be and old custom. The car was bought from a guy in Palm Springs, ca where it had been sitting in the desert for the last 10 years. I was approached at a car show by a guy that said that he believed that this car had been on the cover of car craft magazine years ago. What tipped him off was the radiused wheel wells. He had never seen another Starliner with radiused wheel wells. Would be interesting to find out if this is the same car or just a copy of the original. The car has hydraulics in the rear which screams 1960's custom. Can anyone identify this car or seen it around the so cal scene? Thanks any info would be appreciated.
A desert survivor...you lucky bastid even if it isn't the car you speak of. BTW, I chose that goofy smiley strictly on color to compliment that bad beotch.
that is a very cool car...but i think the one the guy remembers is the Adonis, built by the Alexander Brothers, and recently cloned...i know it was on the cover of Cars Magazine in the early 60's, and i'm sure it was on the cover of others as well.......
Yeah I remember that one. Does the Adonis have radiused wheel wells? Yep I guess I'll bring it tonight Dave.
saw the adonis clone on a mag once, def a nice job. i remember reading something tho that the grandson of the original adonis owner has a 60 starliner, or maybe im dreaming that up...but from what i remember it was a flat toned mild kustom.
yes, the Adonis has radiused wheelwells, they are slightly rounder than the ones on your car, they follow the shape of the tire exactly....bob
those painted bumpers are recent additions....... On My brothers 60Starliner We installed front fender openings in the quarter panels......
Thanks I appreciate it. My buddy owned it then, I bought just after that show. Choprods-Are you saying that you know this car?
Yeah i've seen it. The car was in the riverside area for awhile, This guy name Richard aka the mailman. Traded his chopped and channeled 40 Ford and some cash for that car at Pomona a few years ago(which was big mistake). Drove it in the oc area for a while and it's changed hands a few times
No- Macs55-I was just remarking that I figured the painted bumpers was a recent addition to an old car.........My Bro Scarliner on the HAMB has this 60 -it was a 4 door when he got it........
Rod & Custom November 1963. This was the finale of a multi-part story, How to Customize a Car. R&C used mostly off-t******lf pieces to make the car stand out. The grille was a modified Canadian Meteor unit, for example. The radiused wheel wells were done as a feature by George Barris. Don't know if this is the original or a copy. If it is the original, the only thing left from the R&C version are the wheel wells! Great car either way, though.
If you need any information on the Adonis get ahold of Starliner here on the HAMB. His grandfather comissioned the Alexander Bros. to build the origional. He has got some fantastic stories about taking it across the country showing it when it was finished. You can sit for hours hearing the old stories about the custom car scene as he lived it first hand. Those were the days when you drove your custom across country if you showed it in California or the other way around if you were a left coast native. No airconditioned 18 wheelers like today to pamper the showcars. Frank
I posted your car on another site and this was a response from the president of the SoCal Galaxies club: "That looks like the car the editor of Rod & Custom Magazine built in about '63 or'64, It wasn't lowered then. He installed a '63 XL interior with the buckets and console." Hope that helps L
I specifically remember reading about the buildup of the R&C car in a book called "How to Build Custom Cars" where they reprinted the whole buildup of the car in this book, along with some other buildups, including Roth's Mysterion. Great book, I don't know if I still have it but if I do, I'll scan some pics. I remember the newer buckets and console, how they cut the shifter hole in the floorpan by drilling a ****load of holes with a drill, had a Meteor grille in it with the ornamental grille stars replaced with a flat chrome strip, mag wheels, etc. Great read, if this is that car, I'm jealous.
Thanks so much for all the help on this. I figured someone on here would know something. I'll have to contact Barris and find out if he has any more info about that car and see if he had the vin # of it too. Would be really cool if it really was that car. Although it seems alot has been changed since then. Will keep everyone updated if I find anything out. Thanks.
