    Aftershock most likely.

I thought of that too, but after comparing the photos, it looks like the black and white one was taken first - the banner across the street in the B&W photo is gone in the color one. If the B&W was first, how did the Chevy move up the slab it's sitting on? Rescue attempt?

Since everything else is in the same position, I highly doubt an aftershock. More likely a recovery attempt gone bad.

Peel Trident, I'd love to have one of these with about 500cc of modern bike engine in it!

This is E. 4th Avenue looking east from between A Street and Barrow Street in Anchorage. Not much remains except for the 14 story building on E. 4th and Denali.

The banner is still there in both pics in one it hangs above the street with a sign post on the left side leaning over the street. In the next pic the pole is now laying down into the pit and the sign is across the street at road level perhaps now used to warn people the road is closed off so things look like they were still moving between the 2 shots.I wish my grams was here now because she was right there !When I was 14 I lost an entire album of pics of this quake infact lost everything we owned in a fire that destroyed the storage building our stuff was in during a move.

Tucker fan I'm sure your right I posted from memory of my gram showing us pictures of the quake when she returned from there 1 or 2 years later.I had a lot of photos but lost them all in a fire I knew it was Anchorage but thought it was Main Street.Grams lived a quiet life right before this she was in a huge tornado in Kansas!

There are many photos of this site. It appears the Chevy was moved as cleanup began.

modelamac, would I have your permission to share this story on a facebook group called "You Grew Up In Quincy If" and I would also like to share the picture of Max standing next to the truck?

I also loved reading that story, I am sure that he was one of those that had plenty of stories to tell about the good old days.

I believe it was 1964, I was on my way to Japan on a electra MATS flight out of SF, refuleing in AK. Landed just after the big quake, they kept us on the plane for hours as there wasn't any place to go. The plane had problems so they brought in porta potties and let us stand around in a fenced area until we took off. Never got to see any of the damage.

When I watch Car 54 Where Are You...
I end up singing the theme song in my head-

The earthquake in AK occurred on Good Friday, 1964.
There was no under polar ice cap secret base. Live in AK for over 27 years and been all over the state from north to south and east to west. Several bases that you have to have special permission to get into (I got into them because of my work). There were several bases along the Arctic Ocean and they were called Distant Early Warnning Radar sites or better known as DEW Line sites. They were called DYE sites in Canada and similar sites in Greenland. Cold war stuff.

That was when their hamburgers came with "Jack's Secret Sauce" on them.
