Help... working on a 292 Y motor, and it runs good cold however as it warms up it seems like its loading up and dies. I have ran the valves and the carburetor has been rebuilt, timing checked, points and cap are ok and doesn't appear to have a vacuum leak. Any ideals would be greatly appreciated.

Bump does anyone have a new carb preference? He was wandering what brand and place to get one at?

If you arent looking for horse power or a tri power I would go with a holley 2bbl carb.

    Random suggestions:

If the choke is set full on and the fast idle cam on, will the engine continue to run well until the throttle is opened? Does it run well when cold on the fast idle cam, but dies as the choke opens and the idle drops? Is the choke opening fully? Can it be kept running with more throttle after it is warm?

How many degrees is the initial advance, vacuum advance and centrifugal advance? Is the vacuum advance ported or manifold? Does giving it more initial advance change the idle behavior when warm?

Does it have a heat riser valve between the exhaust manifold and downpipe? If it does and the valve isn't opening, that can cause poor running when warm.

Confirm the correct base gasket. I fought one for half a day before I discovered the numbnuts had used the wrong gasket and had a vacuum leak.

Speaking of vacuum leak, does it have power brakes or a PCV valve, anything else which could be leaking vacuum?

Changing the carb without knowing what is wrong is like wearing mittens while looking for a black cat in a dark room. Good basic engine tuneup science will fix his problem. That OEM carb, properly rebuilt, should run fine. Change the carb and he'll have to change fuel line, throttle linkage, choke line and probably buy an adapter.

what type of carb do you have on the 292 now? I would suggest a 2v set up if you not looking for horsepower and gas guzzling. I have a 2v set up Holley 2100 with Intake manifold for 272, 292, 312...Yblocks. Hoever, addressing your current issue I'd say you may want to check your fire order, plugs and such..Although a vac leak seems the most prevelant...
