Scotsman was the bottom of the line Studebaker car offering from the 50s to the 60s when they stopped production. Virtually no options, trim etc., the Scotsman was as cheap as the legendary Scotsman it was named after.
As the story goes, an American tourist entered a store in a small town in Scotland. He picked up a few items and went to the counter to pay up. He removed his wallet from his pocket and tore open the Velcro closure to get his money. Upon hearing the sound of the Velcro separating the shopkeeper says, "Aye, that's a good Scot's wallet, it even screams when you open it!".

  6. Scotsman is like a 55-58 model, after that all they made were Larks and Hawks (and eventually the Avanti). Rare car, if the six is good it shouldn't be too bad to get going again. If it's too slow for you you can always V8 it. The last two years of Studebaker a Chevy motor was factory, so the swap shouldn't be too bad.

Cool car, and for a 50s Studebaker looks like a very low rust car. The body dates back to 54 with the first Conestoga wagon, and many parts interchange. The main differences are the extended rear quarters and boxier nose that Studebaker added to keep up with the competition regarding the longer/lower/wider concept. If you want to go 259 I've got one complete with all accessories I'd sell you cheap.

Yea...no need to listen to the people calling it the "cheap" cars.
It's based on everything else that Stude made, and as one said, many parts that fit one car, will fit most others.

There are a coupla places to get most everything you need for these cars, both NOS and new replacement parts.

I'm currently putting a V-8 Stude/Chevy trans., in my 54 wagon to make it into my daily driver...

Stude V8's have gear drive camshaft and solid lifters. Pretty stout. You could turbocharge the flat head 6 like TurboStude on the HAMB with a Buick turbo with a suck through system and make about 240hp. Set a bunch of records at Bonneville with the 6.

"cheap" cars are not BAD cars they are just the low or no trim versions of any manufacturers cars made to suit the bottom end of the buying publics wallets.
No need to feel bad about owning ANY old car... even a cheap one.

Scotsman was Stude's stripped, low price car before they introduced the Lark in 1958. If yours runs OK there is no reason you can't keep the stock power train but put in nicer upholstery, add an oil filter and air filter, and generally fix it up.

But, a stock Scotsman complete with painted hubcaps and grille would be unique.

How far did you throw the seat? Get it back if you can. I and possibly some other people would be happier to buy it complete with NO missing parts.

Someone in my school circa 1965 had a Scotsman. It was dumpster green and things like headlight rims that would have been chrome on the common models were painted cream...very much like some 1940's Ford pickups. It just SCREAMED cheapskate owner!
Now, it reminds me of Bruce McCall's fake 1940's ad for the "Scumliner" model for frugal owners...

When I was in college in Carlisle, PA we had "Black Bumper" Mennonites in the area.
These were a German folk about one inch to the left of Amish theologically...they were allowed to have cars, but no flash. They all seemed to drive black lowest model of 1952 Ford with hubcaps, grill, and bumpers brush-painted black over the chrome!
