A neighbour told me today he has a muncie he wants to get rid of. He paid $900 for it as a good running box but found it to not be so good. Says the selector for third is shagged (only downshifting...upshifts OK). He wants to sell it for a fair price considering condition. What's it worth?

Also anyone have info on ID-ing the various Muncie models. I am totally  knowledge free regarding these boxes.

    Thanks

    Pete

  2. Hey Striper,

Dunno about Muncie prices but what motor are you bolting this trans up to and what car is it in?

I bid on one on Ebay about a year ago out of a running vehicle and I think it went for about $200. Add your shipping price to Australia for the weight and that should give you a pretty reliable estimate.

It's going behind a 401 Nailhead in a 28 modified. I've ordered an adaptor from Suedesled.

Too pricey to get one from USA. That's why I asked for local prices. They are one of the few things that are available here. The exchange rate and shipping kills us. Your $200 gearbox could end up costing many times that when landed.

Thanks for the reply, just the same

    Why a Muncie?

Not meaning to tell you what to buy, but wouldn't a top loader be better? They are a lot more plentiful, and surely you could buy a good one first up. There's not much to adapting a loader to a GM bellhousing

    Cheers

I dunno. I asked about recommendations a couple of months ago because I don't know anything about gearboxes and a lot of the replies I got recommended Muncies. I hadn't given it much more thought until this neighbour came over today andsaid he had one.

What is it about toploaders that sways you that way? Is it just the availability? What is involved to adapt one?

What sways me is that they come up in the trading post all the time, and most gearbox people know how to fix 'em.

    Adapter = plate easily machined.

  14. Hey Striper,

FWIW I agree with the Psycho man A late Supra box will take the grunt, is easier to get parts for than a Toploader, will be brand new & not clapped out, has no crappy external linkages like a Muncie/Toploader and is a 5 speed, giving you choices in diff ratio/tire height and cruising ability/economy.

Id check with CRS on prices adapting the Supra alloy 5 speed to the Nailhead adaptor you already have....these are TUFF gearboxes man and they are overengineered.

    Cant hurt anyway....

    Rat and Boi

I would love to put a 5sp in. I'll be seeing a bloke tonite who has 2 and I think he wants them out of his shed. Maybe once I have one to look at I can assess what it would take to adapt. I'm not real keen on dealing with CRS since my last conversation with them. Their solution to my problem was "drop the nailhead in the bay and get a small block Chev". I still get angry every time I think about that dick head. (Not sure who it was).

    Thanks for the suggestions

    Pete

  16. Hey Man,

I didnt even build my ride so who the fuck am I to preach but I think you wont be disappointed with a 5spd. Almost everyone I know who runs a 4spd wishes they had that over drive. Makes for ecconomical and cheep highway cruising and lets you run that 4.11 in the rear for fun without the compromises.

    So.

Fuck CRS and fuck thier attitude, you can make that 5spd work if thats what you want to do. Someone, somewhere will have made an adapter or a local machine shop could do one for you? I could tell you a few cars that came out of CRS i'd like to drop in the bay ahahaha. Just my $0.02, explore the options of the 5spd. Judging by the price I got out of the trading post, you could afford the supra and adapter for the price of one muncie?

    Danny

I was thinking exactly the same thing after I replied to your last.

And yeah OLDS, I'd be interested in anything you find out

    Thanks

    Pete

Edit: BTW I already have a Nailhead to Muncie / Saginaw etc adaptor ordered through NW Speed Eqpt. I also have a plate style adaptor to fit up a Chev auto. Hopefully I can cobble something together

OK 5 speed fans, the deal has been done. A guy is letting me have the two cast iron Celica boxes he has for a very good price. Says he thinks they both have 6 cyl Holden adaptors. That's cool because I happen to have a very hot 6 sitting around that I thought I might use in my next project. Just hope I can find a way to hook one of 'em up tomy Nailhead.

Oh yeah the price. Unfortunately the guy is Russian and wants to be paid in Russian currency......1 slabovic.

    Pete

  20. Excellent!

I knew with enough hassling you'd come round. I wouldnt sweat the celica adapter, if you cant make it swing you'll sell that box for more then you paid for it. Actually, I might stick it in my ride.

Let me know how you go with tracking an adapter...

  25. I know what you mean, I ended up doing about 3 hours on the EK and spent the rest of my time swapping bits from a mates fairlane parts car onto mine (getting the good bits while I can :)). Last minute thing as someone was supposed to be coming to look at it, they never showed it didn't start and the neighbours kids had been throwing bricks at it! Cracked the screen and dented the bonnet. To top it all off he was having steering box issues on his A coop.......

    Back to regular programming, Muncie??????

    Sorry Pete..... :)
