  1. Couldn't spend much time there, but decent for a new show in Pontiac, IL.

Thanks for the post. Neat showing of Roth/inspired cars there. Years ago I fell in love with the Druid Princess, now looking back, I start to wonder...

  4. The Roth cars were the primary reason I went. Was really surprised to hear Tweedy Pie would be there. Other than the old mag's, not many pics seem to be around. Anyway, it appears to be the original Tweedy without the ****py extra's the guy who bought it from BDR put on it (as noted in Ganahl's book). You can tell because they did leave on the exhaust extension running from the lakes type headers into the undercarraige mufflers.

Excaliber/Outlaw was the car that really caught my interest as a kid. Remember sending Ed a letter requesting pics on behalf of a nonexistent car club in order to get 'em free.

P.S. I still contend the Outlaw was the first rod (not exclusively drag car) to use cycle wheels on the front (circa '59). Anybody got any earlier examples?

wasn't it also one of the first rods to use coils on the front? I've always dug Roth's use of chrome coils on the front of his cars.

What is up with that green chopper in the back of the tweedy pie picture(facing the boothill express), and is the tweedy pie paint original with Roth paint or what?

  7. You're probably right about that. Wow, starting two rather big trends with one car -- and there are no doubt others.

  8. Don't know about the Tweedy paint. The "Rodding & Restyling" pics of Bob Johnston's original build looked kind of burgundy, but noted purple accents in the white interior. The '61 "Rod & Custom" cover shows, and article states, burgundy. However, what looks purple now may be because I added some light to brighten up the indoor shot.

As to the green chopper, don't have any pics -- but here's one from the same exhibit as a consolation.

I don't know where all of the Chicago guys were for this show. It is a shame because it was really a good time. The car show itself was your usual hokey muscle car **** for the most part, but there was some cool stuff there too. I spent most of the time hanging out with all of the stripers and Roth afficianados.

Saturday night they wheeled in a cop car and everyone went to town on it. Here are a few highlights of it.

A few HAMBers were in attendance: Fritz, Moriarty, Safarinut, Nummnut, continentaljohn, Abomber30, Wildwilly68, monsterflake and maybe a few others I forgot.

Steve, I saw you guys leaving. We were hiding out under Drew's EZ up.

Safarinut layed down a few stripes on the spacetruck.

Har****, the green bike in the picture was Fritz's. It was a project bike when he worked for Iron Horse magazine, then he tore it all apart and redid it.

The Boot Hill Express was one of 2 built. The first one was the show car, this one was built as a wheelstander. Can you imagine the cajones it took to sit up on top of this thing pulling wheelies?

Great pics, thanks for posting. I didn't know some of those Roth cars were still around. Cool.

I think that 49-51 fleetline was built/painted by Bill Reasoner about 15 years ago. I recall seeing it here in Nor Cal then and was amazed at how deep that candy paint looked. I recognize the car from those signature flared fender skirts.

  14. It was worth the short drive for me just to see the Roth cars. Living around here you never get the opportunity to see some great cars like those. Got to meet a couple more Hamb'rs namely Frtiz, Moriarty, and Safariknut...which was really cool because he did some original artwork for me a couple years ago and got to thank him in person. Of course there was Plowboy to hang with an get the occasional reach around from ;) ....the show has potential to be good with time.

Got anymore pics of that 58 Plymouth?

  16. It's actually a '57. Unfortunately, the only other pic I got was of the engine compartment.

where's all the pictures of that bad-*** 60 chevy? probably couldn't get to it 'cause of the crowds. we drove up in some pretty good rain, and despite the nice weather once we got there, the sun just kills me. i guess i'll have to start keeping vampire hours...

I had a good time at the show. Wish i could have stuck around longer and met a few of you guys. That 57 plymouth was totaly boss. The chrome dash was a cool touch. When i get off of work ill try to post a few aditional picks of my oun. On that boot hill express,I dont see that thing doing any wheelstands with a stock 392. yes that blower was bogus.the other one is at the volo auto museum and is dam nice.

  19. Goober:Thanks for posting the pictures;I didn't get a chance to get around the show at all.Got to meet Plowboy,WildWilly68,Moriarty,and Fritz and about a gazillion other people. The Space Truck looks even better in person than the pics.

I'm glad that guy noticed the motor mount bolts that had worked loose.

I almost didn't go because I was feeling pretty poorly Friday morning when I got up but finally decided to leave around 1pm.Got lost twice and didn't get there until after 10pm Friday night.

All I can say is if you were a striper and you didn't attend, you missed one hell of a show! The highlight of the show had to be the All-Stripers-Deface-the-Polce-Car-Marathon-before-the-Chief-gets-Here Show. What's really wild is the guy who normally drives the car is on vacation and won't get to see it until next week!I'd pay good money to be there to see the expression on his face when he first views it!

Even the mayor was down with it and wants to do it again next year!

The photo op after the show was great too.All the guys who worked on it posed in front of it and then we all faced the car and spread 'em while Shane Syx lay spread-eagled on the ground and the chief stood over him with his foot on his back and pretended to hold a gun on him. Then they presented us with some official Pontiac Police patches.

We raised about $2500 for the local 4-H club which was cool.

The ride home was long and hot(at one point 96 degrees)and to avoid construction on I-80 we decided to sneak across US 30.BIG JUDGEMENTAL ERROR! Traffic lights every thirteen feet(almost like the toll booths on the Garden State Parkway).Took us nearly two hours to navigate 60 miles but the old Safari never missed a beat and the temp gauge went to 180 and stayed.

Just got home about a half hour ago and decided to check a few things on the box.Again it was great to meet everyone and I hope to be there again next year.

Now that is what a real cycle looks like!!! I wish there was more exposure of bikes like this instead of the stretched out and over exagerated cartoon bikes that are forced down our throats every day. Old School Rules!!!

Ray, glad you made it back OK.

To anyone who lives within 2 hours of Pontiac, IL you missed a good time for a lousy 20 bucks.....and you **** for not going! Ha Ha Ha

I suppose next year (if it is happening again) they could save some dough and get some lesser named bands there. It seemed like there was TOO Much there.

I didn't even realize that there was a Tucker there until I saw it leaving! There were so many buildings with stuff in them I didn't go in them all.

It would be a great place to have the Pileup if it gets any bigger. Right on route 66 too.
