Anyone know if the front suspension from a 71 will fit under my 63 c10? Plan to swap the whole suspension crossmember ***embly if it will fit. Thanks
Yup the whole front crossmember and front suspension bolts in. Pretty sure 73-87 bolt in just gotta elongate a couple holes
You can get the disc rotors in 73-87 style, with six-lugs too, so you don't have to change the rear, if you don't want to. Could not find a direct link, but here is a vendor: http://www.earlycl***ic.com/catalog.aspx We just did a '65 C10 in the shop, last week.
I did. Seems like a good board, thanks. Didn't see a thread about front end crossmember swap. Is there no simple way to just do a spindle swap ?
Well you could, but you would still need to change the BJs to the correct units and futz about with tierods. The lower control arms have different bump stop heights for the later spindles, they are taller. The other thing is the later disc spindle is about an inch taller than the drum units. And that will require pulling out a couple of shims per FUCA stud to bring the camber back. There is a bit of conjecture on what swaps and what doesn't. FWIW on a '70 GMC 2500 8 lug drum, we used a '84 Suburban 2500 8 lug discs, control arms, spindles, and inner/outer tie rods. The center link is still the '70 piece. The '84 tie rods bolted to the centerlink. And a MC from a '70 Caprice with disc front brakes. With the installation of the disc brake spindles you will also need to change the MC to a disc type MC. You can find bolt on units, however the port configuration for using a later disc/drum MC is backwards, and the lines need to be flipped. Front to rear and rear to front. And if anyone tries to sell you an uber expensive MC for ~$200 tell em to go shove it. Usually it's just a '70 Corvette MC that can be picked up for ~$30 from Rock Auto.
I haven't ever changed the crossmember to put 71/72 disk brakes on, just the spindles, ball joints, and the change to tie rods.
I've done several this way for customers. Never hurts to put new ball joints in any suspension change anyway, right? I had the stock 5 lug rotors redrilled to 6 lug for one of the conversions where they wanted to run their original wheels. Usually end up putting in power steering too. REZ makes an adaptor.
