The return of the ATLANTA $10,000 (Drags) - October 13th, 2012

The Atlanta 10,000 Drag Race

I hope all who can attend this event will do so. If the idea takes hold, this event promises to be a return to drag racing much like it use to be in the Southeast.

Nostalgia racers, traditional hot rodders, and general enthusiasts who long for the way things use to be need to support such efforts if there is to be any chance of anything like this to exist anymore.


HISTORY:
"The Atlanta $10,000 Drag Races were first held at Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway in 1964. It was the first big Top Fuel and Super Stock event in the Southeast. The race was held annually in October from 1964 until 1972. At that point the NHRA Gatornationals took over and overshadowed the event.

Forty years later we have resurrected the event with the intention of having the race every October and restoring its former glory from the sixties. Each year from 2012 going forward we intend to grow and nurture the event while maintaining the lure of Nostalgia style racing: Family oriented fun without the “in your face” commercialism of modern drag racing."

We went to the swap meet up there a couple weekends back and the turnout was huge. This should get a good turnout also.

My name is B.B. Brown, i put on the Paradise Drag Strip "Show & Go" nostalgia drag meet, car show & swap meet in Calhoun, Georgia. We are having our fall show and go Oct. 6th, i have no problem if you guys want to attend our event and pass out flyers. This show packs out with lots of ol skool gassers, dragsters, hotrods and folks like me who love them. The Hughes family figure large in the history of drag racing in the southeast. The Atlanta Speed Shop was one of the premier speed shops in Georgia and the Atlanta 10,000 is legendary. Some of the greatest names in drag racing raced there during the golden age. The fact that it is being revived as a nostalgia event is very exciting to me. There is nothing I'd like to see more than for this to become an annual event again.

Jetboatmoma is none other than Elaine Hughes. She and her husband, Julius Hughes, Jr. operated the Atlanta Speed Shop and the Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway. She is now a member of the HAMB. Not only is she a great lady, she is in the "been there and done that" category when it comes to the history of drag racing, hot rodding, and drag boats.

Today, her son Julius Hughes III owns and operates the Atlanta Speed Shop. There are two nostalgia FEDs bearing the Atlanta Speed Shop name.
