I am not sure what Alt. you are calling a 4 wire, might throw up a picture of it, or the Delco number. Just off the top of my head if it is whining loud it sounds like you have got the field shorted to full field it and it is putting out full capacity, that or your battery is real low and calling for a lot of amps.

Sounds like your bearings are shot.

Find an old Chev wiring diagram and wire it like the factory, it will work like factory. If it whines only when charging it could just be your battery is half dead. When the alternator is working real hard it makes the belt whine sort of like when the air conditioning kicks in. Check the fan belt, if it is not worn out and is adjusted right, shut the hood and go for a drive. You won't hear it if you turn up the radio. Seriously, when we are really looking at the motor with the hood up we hear lots of things that don't mean anything.

You only use two of the wires. But for the life of me I can't remember which ones . I think 1 an 3.

Make sure you have an large enough gauge wire for engine ground and battery feed wire to the alternator. To small of a gauge will cause excessive resistance. As stated above a detective or low battery can also cause high resistance

That is a CS series alternator.

Connect the "S" terminal in the plug (Larger wire on one end) to the battery. You can just loop it over to the output stud on the alternator.

If you are using a warning lamp, connect one side of the lamp to switched +12v and the other side to the "L" terminal in the plug.

If you are not using a warning lamp, use a 475 ohm 1/2 watt resistor between the "L" terminal and switched +12v
