It's time to head out to Speedworld to support them! They need you. Be glad we have a race track facility, let's keep it. I have been going there since 1969 and do not wish to stop now. How about you? Here we are getting a little crazy in '09 with a for real, old style, fire burnout in my nitro burning 200+mph blown Poncho digger! Great memories at Speedworld and want them to continue. Hope you do to! Let's all be there and tell your buddies too. Here is more info- Support Speedworld Nite and the Cruise-In' for a Cause! As most of you probably know, our battle with Maricopa County is coming to its first real challenge on August 21 with the first of two hearings in downtown Phoenix. This has been a long, expensive and hard-fought battle, one that the outcome of which is by no means yet determined. Yet we are very hopeful for a successful resolution, based on the fact that an overwhelming majority of the charges and claims made by the county against us are unfounded and totally without merit. We're not out of the woods, however, and this is where YOU can help. This coming Saturday night, Speedworld has virtually all of its venues open in a huge show of support: a major motocross, the Glamis Status Mudbogs/Sanddrags, Fightertown Paintball Park AND of course, Speedworld Dragstrip. For you racers, we've just added a special $10 Gambler, presented by the Arizona Drag Racing Association. It's open to everyone with no membership required, will be a combo affair (both electronic & non-electronic) with NO CROSSTALK, .5 full tree, 60/40% payout to winner/runnerup AND Contingency Connection packets to both! We'll have full track prep, too. We'll also have an Open Test & Tune, as it's a Street Meet Saturday night as well (but no rap music lol). All cars & motorcycles are welcome! Yes, it's going to be on the warm side, but it will be a great tuneup for the fall racing that will be upon us before we know it. Plus, it will help a lot in supporting Arizona's oldest and friendliest dragstrip just before we go to the mat with the county. Overnight camping is free if you don't want to drive home after the races, too. The fuel depot and food stand will both be open as well. Drag racers will park in the area behind the tower and surrounded by the staging lanes, first come, first served. Gate fee is $20 Vehicle/Driver, crew/spectators are $10. Gambler $10 lane fee is in addition to the gate fee. For the non-racers, there's the Cruisin' for a Cause, starting at the MexTec Restaurant on the Southwest corner of 67th Ave & Bell Road. It gathers starting at 5pm and leaves for Speedworld at 6pm. It's only $10 a carload (only if you participate in the cruise) and is open to all vehicles. All of the Cruise vehicles will participate in a big Car Show right behind the main bleachers. All in all, it's going to be a very fun night, and I hope you'll join in the excitement! The Dragstrip Gates will open at 7pm and we'll run until 1am (or whenever we finish if there's a big turnout!) See you there! Steve www.pontiacheaven.org
Just a thought..... why not have the biggest fund raising event possible by speedworld similar to how this one sounds. Shut down the venue like the county is requesting. Then take all the proceeds from the fundraising and walk into the county office and pay them for the required permits they are claiming need to be obtained. And then get the land lease back on track. In my experience as a contractor, these agencies are always looking for ways to squeeze cash out of people to oblige to them. They dont really seem to care so much about what work you are doing, just how much money they get for permits.,
hmmm Steve. Not sure that is the issue. My understanding is compliance with the zoning regulations. Do not think it has anything to do with cost of permits. I have talked to Dan myself and kept current on issues as I have personal interest in Speedworld ( I have run events there since 1998 ). apparantely there are issue with electrical, buildings, fences, etc. Not the permit costs themselves. If you know different for sure, let us know. We are all remaining very positive about Speedworlds future but, not over confident. Speedworld is too important to loose. It is part of all of us.
Maybe i read something wrong online. http://www.azcentral.com/news/artic...eedworld-must-close-maricopa-county-says.html
I heard that every time they do maintenance to one of the dirt tracks to smooth them out before a race it is considered grading and they are supposed to get a permit.
That's Jim Wray owner of J&W Transmissions in his 51' Plymouth Wagon, he's been one of our major sponsors from the start. He also has built all of my tranny's and motors since I was a kid and I have always treated what he builds me so nice .......LOL......... Hope to see you all out at Mixteca and the track Saturday Night, I'm cruzing my 49' out and running it in street trim, hope the Hurst Cheeter Slicks give me enough bite to at least get into the 12's Come on out and help support "Arizona's" Oldest-Finest Dragstrip.
See ya'll there. I'll be bringing out my '63 409 Impala for her first time on the strip. We need to support Speedworld, it's one of the most bitchin' dragstrips in the country, still has a 1960s vibe and 50 years of drag racing history. Get your lazy behinds out there, gonna be a blast for sure.
I was there! Car ran horribly (11.53 @117) but it was a fantastic night out there! Just to clarify, the picture isn't last night either.
Just want to thank those who came out last nite, I saw applekrate, spike, Mike(and by the way bitchin car hope to see the impala out there more) Marky and few other H.A.M.B. folk out there. We appreciate your support! Rich Swick Speedworld tech
Mike, I got to see you make a couple of passes, that 409 sounds awesome going down the track, I love it. I only got to make two passes all night with helping at the gate and all, I couldn't get any traction with the cheeter slicks, had to peddle it a few times off the line to keep from over winding. All I could get out of it was 13.66 @ 99 mph.
Mike, I also saw your car there, looking good! glad you were out there to support our home track Speedworld.
Thanks guys, my heap held together and did all right. Kinda slow (best run was 16.90, I think that falls into the "month of Sundays" bracket), but she sure looked and sounded good. A bit of tuning, fix my gas pedal issue and speed should improve a bit. It'll always be mainly a street car, so it'll never be really fast. Great turnout for the event. I had a blast. I hope we can keep this place open.
That motor sounded great with the duel quads and open headers, its geared pretty tall though...I only heard it shift twice, I bet you could go another 1/4 mile before you would have to be in 4th. What type of headers are you running?
I'm not sure who manufactured the headers. They are old N.O.S. tri-y style headers made specifically for that application.
