I converted my car (54 belair) to 12v awhile back and have had an indicator light issue. The turn signals themselves work just fine. but when the car is on the indicator lights stay on at about 3/4 power, as well as blinking on the opposite side. Anyone encounter this problem? Ive been over the wiring many times now, so lets say ive octuple checked
I believe you'll find It's feed back due to a bad ground with the light sockets somewhere. Could be just one or all 4. The Wizzard
grounds for turn signal indicators ground with the actual turn signals correct? Thanks for your help fellas, hopefully ill track it down.
Just to be clear for you. The actual bulb housing or socket needs to be grounded directly. I have never seen a plastic receiver for the Bulb itself. The base of the bulb needs ground and if it has 2 nubs on the bottom then there is 2 filliments for it to do 2 different jobs. Not 1 nub for power and 1 nub for ground. The Wizzard
There was a thread a while back on a similar problem with another early '50s GM car. The dash sockets are not grounded, one side of each socket is hooked to the pilot terminal on the flasher and the other side hooked to matching turn signal wire. It was determined the replacement 3 prong flasher was incorrect for this GM system. The "cure" described was to determine the correct OEM flasher type and cross it over to the 12 volt version. If you look at the '54 Chev wiring schematic you can see how the system is wired. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/electrical/wiring/pdf/54car.pdf
as for the plastic bulb housing, ive owned three 54 chevys and all of them have it. Just checked the flasher, had a plastic housing one from shmucks, and had another metal housing one from napa. Changed it out and the turn signals no longer stay on, but when i turn left or right both indicators flash. So it does seem that its the flasher. gonna have to cross check the flashers.
