Wanting to do a big chop on my car.. But I went to the gl*** guy around here an he said it would be hard to cut the gl*** in the 50 because of the 2pc front gl***... My question is would I need to get a windshield channel out of a 53-54 to do a 1pc or is the any where to get a chopped 2pc gl***???
First of all, it's wise of you to consult with a gl*** guy. A lot of people chop, then go find someone to cut and install the gl***. Sometimes the chop is so outrageous and f'd up, there's nothing a gl*** guy can do, except use his imagination to work it out. I should know, I use to do auto gl***. I don't see why it's so difficult, when the windshield is in 2 halves - in fact, makes it easier to cut down. Look for another gl*** guy.
I am in the process of chopping my 51 now. I found these tech articles from Rod and Custom extremly helpful. The gl*** house I talked to said mo problem, but no garantee. http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com...hevrolet_windsheild_replacement/photo_04.html http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/techarticles/0903rc_1950_chevy_chopped_top/index.html http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/techarticles/0903rc_the_gl***_house_gl***_hot_rods/index.html
Think its more because of the curve then just the 2pc... This guy is about the only one around here that will cut gl***... He's done alot of them just not any 50's... I just didn't know if there was some where to get custom front gl*** or just do the swap ?

You can buy a one piece windshield to fit a stock car so I would imagine you can just do your chop, and have the one piece windshield cut. No modifications are needed to mount the one piece. I suppose you will have to cut the rubber. Good luck and start a build thread here when you start the chop! -Keith. Chevy of the 40's and others sell the gl*** I'm sure.
Please correct me if there's something I'm not getting here and I'm wrong, but... If you'll use one piece gl***, it will have all the same curves, so it's not gonna solve anythig about how difficult it is to cut... If it is possible for someone to cut the one piece windshield, it will be as possible, or easier, to cut the 2 pc windshield.
'50-'51 Olds 76/88 use the exact same body shell as the Chevy, and for that matter if you use a fastback body gl*** it's already an inch shorter than a notchback is going to be. I've no idea why anyone would feel cutting the 2-pc would be any harder than a one piece. If anything it would be easier to handle the two sections.
I just chopped a 50 Chevy and kept the split windshield . The chop is 4" at the A Plillars and my gl*** guy said he could handle the 2 piece gl***. It's going to him this week, so check my build thread if you want to see how that works out. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=673698&highlight=50+chevy+chop

I agree with beebing when he says find a new gl*** guy. I chopped my 50 Pontiac hardtop (so pretty much the same as your chevy) and although it is a mild chop my gl*** guy had no problems cutting the original gl*** to size. I understand that the front gl*** is curved but because it is still 2 pieces would make it easier not harder because there is less tension at the opposite side when being cut because it is shorter. There are no guarantees obviously when going to get your gl*** cut, but I hear waterjetting gives the best success rate, just have to find a shop who would want to do it.
Find a different gl*** guy, its flat gl***. Way easier to cut flat gl*** than curved gl***. Oh you should suggest that your gl*** guy use new gl*** it won't be as brittle as 60 year old gl***.
just got mine done,2 piece gl***. my gl*** guy here uses a wet belt sander to cut(shape the gl***) to fit. he made a mold out of fibergl*** the sands the gl*** to the size of the mold.
here are a few chops run thru my shop. sorry I don't do mobile chops. 90% are just and old Gl*** Cutter using an old gl*** cutter
