Speedo still a little jumpy...

Can any of you veteran 1951 Merc owners confirm or deny that speedos back then were never very smooth in their readings?

Even after disconnecting from both ends, cleaning and inspecting then adding a full tube of speedo grease and reconnecting, its better but still a bit jumpy. A lot less clicky and erratic but still not smooth.

    Is this normal?

    Please advise.

    Thanks!

Does it jump at lower speeds (35 and below) or upper speeds (40 and up)? Low speed fluctuation is usually cable, upper speed is usually in the speedometer its self.

If it's the cable, it could be binding near the small radius bends. Unfortunately, those are usually found in back of the speedometer under the dash in the worst places to reach. They often happen when you're trying to stuff the cluster all back together into the dash. Try to find those bends and increase the radii as much as possible

Make sure you post your questions on the main board next time so you dont get in trouble.

My apologies. I had no clue I could cause trouble posting questions here.

    It's jumpy equally throughout.

There are no small radii along the length. The gear at the ****** end was in great shape. No visible signs of wear. As was the squared end that plugs into the actual gauge.

Think I'll try installing a new cable and housing and see what happens.

    Advisable or not?

It sounds like it's time to send your speedometer into a reputable shop. There are several points of wear within the average speedometer that can cause problems. It is better to have it serviced currently, rather than wait for it to seize up and tear things apart.
