Had my front undercarriage looking pretty spiffy pre-Bonneville, now I wish I had just kept all the old oil and grease in there. At least I have a year to clean...

I have heard some of the rent a car companies and motor home rental companies will not rent a car in that area during Speedweek for exactly that reason, or they make you sign a damage waiver or something to that effect.

Now you see why cars from the snow States rust out so bad.

Maybe next time, spray the under carriage with WD-40?

Me, being so far away from snow or Bonneville, always wondered how much damage could be done with "only" one speedweek trip, I think I got my answer .
The question for all other Bonneville experts would be how to prevent it, maybe spraying WD40 all over the undercarriage?

Dude; salt, like rust, never sleeps. From my experience, once it touches your vehicle, it is there forever. Yes, you can steam clean, treat every surface with oil, polish and buff but...no, it will haunt you forever. Best thing to do is to prep your vehicle before you hit the salt. If you didn't, sorry about your luck but congrats for getting on the Salt. Consider salt corrosion as the tax due for your accomplishments.

Glad to see I'm not the only one... who has removed so many leaves from the pack to have it arch the wrong way. :)

If it takes me all year to get it clean and sealed again, it was worth it. Tax due is right! I think WD-40 and motor oil next year.

Just how much room is there between the top of the spring pack and the bump-stop? Dang.

I've actually got about an inch, can't tell here. It very rarely hits the bumpstops.

Been there done that. My dad and I went in 07 and there was a slush pit of soupy salt (forget how long it was) entering the salt from lands end rd. The under side got wet soupy salt EVERYWHERE and we still find salt in places. Although nothing super bad you just dont like to see things get rusty like that after years of being fine driving around California. It probably wouldnt have been so bad if it were dry salt though.

Been working on my deuce roadster ever since I returned last Friday from Bonneville. Pulled the front end all apart. Cleaned everything and put a light coat of Troys penatrate on everything. Pulled rotors & hubs, cleaned bearings, races & repacked. Pulled rear wheels and went through the rear brakes. Cleaned them good with brake cleaner & done the rear wheel bearings also. Cleaned all the rims and put a coat of wax on them.
I will take on all of the under body parts starting tomorrow.
I will point out I treated everything on the underside of the roadster with Troys product before going to bonneville and I think it helped a bunch.
Just a small price to pay for so DAM much fun...I am sure we were breaking the law some how.

I took my roadster out, but even though I got **** for it, I would not take it above about 10 miles per hour, never out of first gear. I sprayed the whole underside of my car with PAM before we left, duct taped the bottoms of the rockers and door jams before heading on the salt, and when I got back home I had NO salt under my car (aside form a little on the wishbone/oil pan from the tires while turning). I gutted the entire interior when I got home, sprayed it all off/out.
It would have been fun to rip across the salt but I just knew what would happen.

Think how many guys are out there in 50-60k diesel trucks and nice trailers! What are they gonna look like in 10 years??

Heres another questions- will salt corrode dry, or does it have to have moisture to rust?

An unnamed rodder has been seen leaving the salt all over his coupe like a merit badge while taking it to shows for the rest of the summer and fall. He'll learn.

Some people have said they put a lawn sprinkler or two under the car and let it just spray the underside for a long time to flush out the salt.

When I get back with the RV I put the lawn sprinkler under it for a couple of days. This year I took the truck. The salt was pretty dry and the truck didn't pick up too much salt. The well oiled chain in my sidecar is now turning brown. Its OK though. The chain is a six run chain and then s****ped.

What about that stuff the dirt oval guys spray on their frames so the caked dirt comes off easier after they run? I know guys who do the sprinkers under the car trick 24/7 for a week. Sure runs up your water bill, and if you live in a dry / drought stricken area, kinda uncool. Gary

I have had the sprinkler under my truck all day today. I will probably run it tomorrow too. I shot the **** out of it with Pam before I went on the salt. JC

a week on the salt has to be the equivalent of a hunnert chicago winters. the chain on my minibike was rusted stiff a couple days after arriving home.

After I got to Joplin, I did the carwash thing, sprayed everywhere possible to get to without jacking it up. Still had caked on salt.

I had to lube the 4 spd. shifter mechanism to loosen it up enough to shift on the way home.

Then ran into a hellacious thunderstorm in NM. Washed out the rest of the salt and the lube out of the shifter again! Had to relube after leaving Albequerque since I only had 3rd and 4th gear.

yep, the evils of rust help to prolong the great memories of Bonneville - you did have fun didn't you? regulars start taking their rides apart as soon as they get home to do battle with rust. worst is on full fender rides and salt gets up into inner fenderwells, etc where nothing can get it out and rusts from the inside out.

A friend has had the floor rust out of his van after 3 times out. I take rental cars and spray with PAM and hit the car wash daily. Ain't been busted yet. I think folks who soak em in salt are in for a rude awakening down the road. That being said, it is yours to enjoy.

It's more fun rusting my truck up on the salt flats than it is rusting it up driving through the Cleveland winters thats for sure. JC
