I've got these three steering wheels and would like to use one of them on my 38 Chevrolet, the problem is how to get the horn ring off without breaking it, I'd appreciate help from any old GM guys that have experience. I've tried the push in and turn left and right but there doesn't seem to be much movement and they may be rusted inside because all three were laying outside. Thanks!
Pretty sure the Buick one you take a flathead screwdriver and gently pry off the horn button, and then there will be screws to remove the horn ring. On the pontiac one, it should twist off, my 51 does... Not sure about the caddy, probably the same as the Buick.
On the Caddy DO NOT pry it off...it'll break...!!! The Caddy has a twist off dealio...however you must push DOWN on the center bullet only and twist at the same time...I can't remember if right or left twist...and sometimes those old bullets have been on there for a long time and it'll take some twisting and pushing to loosen them...there are three "legs" at the bottom of the bullet that have to line up with the openings to come off...That bullet is plastic all the way thru and it doesn't give up easily...DO NOT PRY on it...it'll shatter...!!! And there's not any way to spray any WD40 or loosening material under that bullet/cap...just keep pushing and twisting... R-
The shaft & splines on Buicks & Cads are one size too big, but the Pontiac will bolt on. The Cad horn cap turns CCW about 1/4 turn once you get all the stuff inside moving ...
That's right! You could take an old chevy steering wheel and cut out the center and then have it welded in to your wheel of choice! That's what I did on my 53 Chevrolet Sent from my iPhone using TJJ app
Thanks for the help, you guys know what you are doing! I now have the Pontiac "restored" and will use it. After dis assembly of the Buick I gave it back to the guy that gave it to me so he could sell it. The Caddy now has the cap off but there is not enough space to get a socket on the nut to get it off, it is really rusty
If you drill through each side of the nut you can usually split it off. Even if you drill into the threads on the shaft, a new nut will still hold.
I ended up using a rosebud head on the torch, heated it a bit, let it cool and then was able to get a socket and rattle gun on it, finally got it off, but.......the nut wouldn't go back on, I ended up modifying it a bit and now it is a wall hanger
