I sometimes smelled gas in my galaxie and now I noticed gas leaking on the tank so it needs to be fixed,I dont have the money for a new tank so I was wondering if there are any products made that I can patch the tank myself that will actually work.
KBS Coatings internal sealer. But make sure you pretreat the tank first. You have to let it dry for a few days after treating so be prepared to be laid up for most of the week. Can you see where the leak is coming from? Is is a gasket leaking or rust thru?
I use JB weld to fix gas tanks, make sure you clean it up good.Youcan add a little fibergl*** cloth for big holes.
Just buy the $3-5 2 part gas tank sealent at any parts store. Used the stuff 5/6 times over the years works great for a small leak.
For interior take-the-tank-out sealants, I've used both Kreem and the KBS Kit with equal success. One time on my way to Lead East I had a tank develop a leak where a side seam meets the bottom. I picked-up a two-part, knead-together epoxy - probably JB Weld - and stuck it on in the parking lot while the tank was still dripping. Owned that truck for years and never did go back and fix it "right". It didn't leak from then on.
Jeff, If the time comes and the tank your replacing is for your 65 Galaxie, they dont make replacements. But the tank from a 66 will work, its approx 4 gallons larger so you will need to get the 66s straps. One more thing, If your the guy Im thinking of, did you end up with Elwood, Jans (tbirdchicks) 64 ?
The tank is clean on the inside and looks to be rusted from the outside, its leaking where it sits against the trunk floor so it will come out when I run the gas out and see how bad it is.
If you are going to pull it out take it to a radiator shop and let them vat it and patch the leak correctly. HRP
in my experience , if you have a few small leaks in a fuel tank you probably also have a bunch of them ready to start leaking . stuff you stick on the outside like JB are temporary fixes in my opinion. and if you pull the tank to seal the inside you might as well just buy a new tank how much is that `66 galaxie tank?
Its around 300 for a new tank, straps and correct sending unit, just bought new tires so no money for a new tank right now and I need to keep the car on the road. The 65 is my car that I take to shows when its rainy and I need it running for the Ducktail run since it likes to rain that weekend and that show is coming up in a few weeks but I got other expenses coming up too so money is tight.
i used this stuff to patch a pinhole in the fuel tank on my lawn mower. it has held up for about two years , but i still consider it a temporary fix
I think that it really depends on how large the leak is. We used to fix them when I was in mexico with fiber gl***, some of the fellas would really gouge them. It worksd well and if you are careful after a little paint they look well to boot.
Auto City list a tank for under 200 bucks to fit your car. HRP http://www.autocitycl***ic.com/inde...facturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=64
I've owned several mid to late '60s Galaxies, LTD.'s etc. and the I can tell you from experience that once the tanks on these start leaking, you are better off with a new tank.... every single one of my cars developed a tank leak at some point, and usually one leak lead to anther in a short time....I personally would try to locate a new tank and be done with it. Tom
Had a Nash Metro ages ago that sprung a gas leak in the bottom of the tank. An old timer told me to take a bar of Ivory soap and rub it on the leak. It worked !!! But I had to reapply it when driving in the rain. True story.
I was looking at some I think was from them they had on ebay for about 30 dollars higher, they usually come to a local swapmeet and will call them in a couple days to see if they are coming to the fall show. If they are not I will patch the tank to get me by until next spring and get a new tank at the spring show that they usually attend, just too many bills and other expenses to buy a tank right now and I need to keep it on the road until the city starts putting salt on the road.
I have taken gas tanks out and filled them with water and then sandblasted the holes, followed by drying off and a coat of fibergl***. Been holding for over 10 years.
I will decide what I will do when I pull the tank next week,I have to run out over a half tank before thinking about removing it. While I have it up in the air in the rear I will pull the rear tires and have the rubber removed so I can paint the rims and install new tires and then all the over 10 year old radials are gone.
