Yup, you have to pry out the oil seal. Like I said above, they come out with a brake s**** easily. Or use the lazy man's method, also described above. When you work in a shop doing these all day, any short cut saves time. Put the drum back on. Thread the spindle nut back on at least 1/2 way. Grab the drum and pull it hard towards you. This pops the seal off and the bearing and seal stay on the spindle. Bob
Nope. A flat head screwdriver or anything like that will work fine You'll really wreck the seal pullin it out so just figure on a new one. Theyre $3?? Fun aint it?? Get new cotter pins too. Another 50 cents is alot of piece-o-mind. Just do one side at a time so you still "example A" If you end up changing bearings make sure you do the races too. Maybe the pictures show the bearing in the race as a unit. Its two piece. Go slow, have fun, ask alot of stupid questions. Its all easy and hasnt changed much in a long time.
I think I'd want to replace the seals on a 58 year old truck, or any time bearings are removed. Bearings come with the races and if you know the tricks, they come out easy, going in is another story. I have an old set of races with the outer diameters ground down and I use those to drive the new ones in. Bob
"If it has not been stated, make sure to period correct grease." Wadayamean??? And how do I get the oil seal back in? Hammer and wood block? Or just smack it back in?
I think "period corect grease" was meant to be funny. There are seal drivers, but I just tap them in gently with a hammer. The wood block will work. Bob
Thanks bobss396! Rickybop has been givin' me pointers on the side and with you guys helpin out I think I've got yhis thing figured out. Really quite simple when ya know what to do. Like everything in life!!!!! I thought the seal was actually part of the hub itself. Thank you all again!
