I have a mid to late '60's Jeep Tornado straight six out of an M series truck that I want to use in a '34 Plymouth 5W rat rod project. Why...?? Because it is simply different and rather cool looking for a straight six. I'm told they all came backed by a double low geared manual transmission. Wondering if there is a conversion to a later model four or five speed manual or even an automatic. I've heard rumblings about a Ford Ranger conversion but cannot find any info on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks
Was this six available in the Cherokee with an automatic? If so, there may be a way to hook a TH400 up to it. There also may be a way to run the late 50s Ford auto trans with it, as Jeep used the Borg-Warner variant of this trans in 63-64. And depending how the trans bolt pattern is, you may even be able to put a Mopar 727 behind it. Someone will comment that you need to post an introduction, so you might want to go do that too.
Come to think of it, I had a Ford toploader that the number came up as Jeep, it was just a 4-speed with a fairly low first, like a granny gear, so that's another possibility.
Thanks Rusty...I will do that. As for the other replies , I did not expect down trodden criticism here no matter the build.....
FWIW I have a few 230's with 3 speeds. They are standard BW type. You should be able to find another BW of the era and make the swap. Or you could get ahold of a T-5 and see how close it is. Maybe that's what I should do since I have both in the garage..... But it would take 2 days to make room to drag the 230 out from under the stairs. Jeff
You do realize that this is a traditonal hot rod board and your "rat rods" are highly frowned upon here. It may have been prudent for you to do some homework on what the HAMB is and "isn't about before coming on. Or are you a troll from one of those RR boards?
You will get better results on a jeep forum. T 90 three speeds an BW automatics come to mind from a mid to late 60s Wagooneer or Gladiator. These engines had oiling problems and didnt rev very fast. More trouble than they are worth. Ron
Having had nothing but bad experiences with that engine, I wouldn't take one as a gift, much less build a rod around it. It's a long stroke oil burner. Your money, your time, your decision. jack vines
I remember that those tornado sixes were popular in racing in Argentina. Kaiser had a presence there. I guess that they figured out the potential problems.
