I had one rebuilt for a slant 6 at a local shop here in Sacramento. Cost a $100 bill.

Good to know, it is going in Monday. Damn, no-running Packard...I think my Chevy truck might have snuck over there in the night and sabotaged it!

I looked in my Motors Manual too, just a general starter section but now you have an idea of what is involved, great illustrations of the starter drives BTW.

I used to do my own Ford and Chevy starters now and then and parts were easy to come by, I doubt anywhere but an auto-electric shop would remotely have everything on hand, but they can get whatever you need.

Good luck finding any auto electric repair shops today. All the ones in my suburban DC location have all disappeared. Even the ones with decades of proud service have all folded up. The bendix broke on my 6V Stude starter in 05 and I was lucky to find one locally under 1/2 of dust at local shop in business since I was a teenager but the shop closed up and the one that I did find about a 1/2 hour away had bought all of their old stock from them. They rebuilt my 6V starter using 12V field windings but that Co. is gone now too.

Considering the price of rebuilt starters in the 60s the price has not escalated at the same rate as other parts have.

You won't find any hard to get orphan parts at a national chain. As soon as the bean counters discover that they don't sell oodles of them weekly they will be replaced with stock that moves quickly off the shelves.

When in doubt, send it out! Bebco here in Birmingham Al. is the place to go in these parts, about $100.00

Since Bradley's in Raleigh is gone, I usually take them to Johnny's Auto Electric in Garner. Depending on the parts needed anywhere from $65-125 most likely.
But they do good work, or at least have for me.
