I think it's because muscle cars emerged.

I think its because after 64 the styles on most major car manufacturers took a turn towards muscle and similar styled cars. But there are some cars built in 65 that do make great customs, so its not like everything was terrible.

I think 1965 is a great cutoff year, 1948 is even better, and pre 1942 is the all time best. If you use 1965 it keeps out Mustangs, and all the other cars that ar 60-80% of most shows and makes room for the "Good Stuff". Life was a lot nicer in general up till 1965. :)

Muscle cars killed Hot Rods starting in 1965 another reason to pick that year.

muscle cars ruined hot rods, because you didn't have to hot rod them to go fast.

If you are talking about why this message board is Pre-65, I'll let you know.

Before I showed up, everyone was all "just like the 50's, bro!" ....then they saw my bitchen '63 Fairlane.

Then all of a sudden it was "early 60's RULE....all else drool".

.....Then I made the '63 into a "street freak gasser" and everyone went gasser crazy.

Yep. Its all because of me. Everyone wants to be a TINGLER. :D

........and then 5.0 mustangs ruined musclecars.

It was hard to tell if you were lining up against a 13 second car or a 9 second car.

'65 is the year cars officially became "Unsafe at any Speed."
It was also a major body and frame design change year for a lot of cars especially GM big cars, and I think Mopar too.
    and the Mustang thing.
plus in '66 SMOG equipment and federal smog regulations went into effect spoiling a lot of fun, "legal" street hotrodding fun anyway.
The whole game changed around then.

I understand the reasoning behind the pre-65 cutoff. Every time I go to a pre-72 show I feel like I'm in muscle car hell...and I actually own a muscle car. As mentioned before, you don't really have to rod a muscle car. Most of the ones that get drooled on where I live are just restored factory originals. They have their place, but it's not in the area of traditional rods and customs.

Well, one muscle car managed to sneak in before '65.

1964 GTO. The one that started, er ruined it all. :D

I disagree, they were just marketed better.

  18. Plus theres no such thing as a traditional 67 chevelle or a period correct 69 duster, unless their restored and we all know about restorers

  19. I love muscle cars. They were a lot of fun in the 70s. Pretty much made a serious living street racing then! "BUT", i agree that their current owners are mostly dorks. Killer multi carb, big inch solid lifter motors, ram air scoops, fat tires, and radical colors from the factory? You gotta think, pretty fucking cool.

  20. But between muscle cars and the beatles hot rods didn't stand a chance

I personally never understood it,there are a lot of cool cars that are then "disqualified" besides, whats the difference between a 64 and a 65 rivi or t-bird?Not much.If the idea is to keep the muscle cars out of the shows, just say that no muscle cars allowed..shouldnt be too hard, besides I`ve seen a LOT of butt ugly pre 65 cars:rolleyes: heres another pic of my 65,doesnt look like a muscle car to me[IMG]

  24. I agree. How about 67 Grand Prix or Riviera? If it's muscle you want out, just say it. How about a well done 68 Eldo?

the WORLD as a whole USED TO GIVE A FUCK about stuff like that,,,,

i think that between JFK, the beatles,musclecars,beehives,vietnam,hippies... etc...the WORLD changed.....those that were there at that time know what im talking about...

I agree. That's why I used to go a lot of lowrider shows. Tons of post-65 customs that aren't anywhere near the look, theme, or attitude of muscle cars.
Haha. Very true. Not to mention the redundance. I don't know how many more 54 Chevy coupes I can handle. I ain't knocking traditional rods, but there are times when it's just the same ol shit. This exists in every style though.

I think that for the intent of the HAMB, the cutoff is reasonable. But I'd like to see more shows allowing late 60's cutoms.

    Here's my '66 Caddy
    [IMG]

And here's my '67 Cutlass (Not a 442). I've gotten alot shit from muscle car guys for "lowriding" my cutlass.

Damn Caddyman, those Rivi headlight covers look so right on that car, like they were made to go there.

As far as the cutoff date goes, it does exclude some very cool cars that certainly would fit in with the rest of the crowd, the problem is, you have to have a cutoff somewhere. If you put "No Musclecars" on your car show flyers, you'll have guys trying to explain how their '69 Cougar is technically a personal luxury car, or you'll have kids in 5.0 Mustangs and pimped out Honda's saying that their cars are customs and not musclecars. Once someone gets to the gate, it's going to be hard to turn them away. A date cutoff is clear and people know ahead of time what's allowed and what's not.

You just can't win. If you have a cutoff, you will exclude some cool shit, but if you don't, you'll have a lot full of PT Cruisers and Toyotas with dragon graphics on the side. As far as the specific year goes, I think everyone's right, it's to keep the musclecar crowd out and focus on the early stuff
