So this marks the start of my motor education and planning. I will start by posting a few images of what I have, then I'll post what I think I know about it, and what I believe should be my path forward.

those are some serious valve reliefs in the pistons. No problem with the valves hitting the pistons due to a big cam.

I have always been a 4-Stroke fan. I love torque and low end power. That being said, I'm looking at an Idle-5500 or 1500-6500 motor built.

Trick Flow heads with Edlebrock cam, intake and carb have been suggested to me.

As I browse parts on Summit Racing, I notice how widely varied the prices are. Should I splurge for the most expensive parts? How much of a difference is there, and how do I know what level of part I should go with?

The KB rep told me they are +7cc.

What that means is, when you do your compression ratio calculation, in addition to the cc volume of the cylinder head combustion chamber, you must add 7cc to that number, because that's how big those valve reliefs are. There will also be a "cc" number that you need to include, depending on the thickness of the head gasket

Yes he is. Uriah Heep may well have come and gone before you were born. Ever read Charles Dickens "David Copperfield" or listened to old English rock bands?

Here is what I believed to be the piston specifications while thinking I had a 383:

    That could be a 302, a 327, 350 or a 383. Can you measure the stroke and let us know what it is? 3" is a 302, 3.25 is a 327 and 3.5 is a 350. If the stroke is 3.75 then you've got a stroker 383.

The spec sheet you posted says a 6 inch rod. Are there any visible numbers or other ID on the rods that you can see? KB makes the same piston for use with a 5.7 inch rod, which is the stock length. I don't think there were too many 6-inch rod SBC motors built way back in 1964. For that matter I don't think those pistons were available way back then. How do you know this motor was built in 1964?

CAMSHAFT? That will will help w/ head selection. What is the intended vehicle? And Uriah was an excellent band. An acquired taste.

The intended use is as the power plant for my 2R5 pickup. Cruising around town,
yearly road trip to Hot August Nights, etc.

I was looking at Edelbrock 2210 - Edelbrock Rollin' Thunder Hydraulic Roller Camshafts.

    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-2210/

    However, I was looking at:

    Trick Flow Specialties TFS-K314-420-395 - Trick Flow® 420 HP Super 23® Top-End
Engine Kits for Small Block Chevrolet, which comes with a cam.

Small journal 327, forged crank, aftermarket rod bolts, and the already mentioned KB pistons; that's what I see. Hard to tell if it's been balanced, but the balancing pads on the big end of the rod look untouched I did'nt actually plan it this way, but I have THREE, 327's, a 350, and a stroker 305 (334 CID). Nice start. Butch/56sedandcelivery.

The rods look stock, not aftermarket 6 inchers; are you sure you have the right KB part number?

I seem to have missed a lot of questions.

I know the block is a 64 by the cast number. The pistons and crank happened a few years back when dad started the project.

So what are the thoughts on these? Any input on cam, heads, or intake?

  26. Mr48,
This is not a scare type of post just information. I had a set of Keith Black pistons one that the valve reliefs were not in the right place, either I had goofy heads or they were not machined correctly, the intakes hit the edges of the reliefs and I had to open them up a bit. I check every set any more no matter who bulds them or how deep the pockets are. ;)

Mr deep nice looking short block by the way.

    Ok, question for the hive...

I am looking at motor placement, and thinking that having the headers for mockup will be beneficial.

So now I must ask, anyone have header suggestions? Flowtech? Short, mid, full? I'm thinking the money for the ceramic coating would be well spent.

I see all these different models of headers that are vehicle specific, but obviously the 327 wasn't a Stud option, so it seems to be a guess as to which part to buy.

    3782870 casting is for 62-65 327 originally.

Thanks Ed... I've got the date and block figured out. Now it's about exhaust selection.

Back to Google for me... If it's on the internet, it HAS to be true, right? LOL
