I am starting to build a 283 for my 30 model a sedan and was wondering if i could use a 327 crank and what other parts i can interchange. I was told that the block is out of a 65 chevelle. It has been rebuilt one about 20 years ago. I know they put a mild cam and it has 327 heads on it but unfortunetly they are not the double humps. The thing that gets me is after they did all this to motor they left the stock intake and 2bl rochester in it.
whats wrong with the 283 crank? the old trick was to use a 283 crank in a 327 block, which destroked to a 302. hence the dz 302 motors in z28s. i'd leave that crank in there and slap an intake and carb and be done.
Man I thought you ment you had 283 questions and I was gonna say is that all? The 327 crank gives you a bad bore to stroke ratio. not a good idea. get yourself hooked up with a decent induction and ignition and drive the wheels off it. Nothin' in the world wrong with a 283.
Put a 327 crank in it and you have a 307. All in all not a BAD engine, a 283 with more torque. You have to get the 307 specific pistions to make it work ( the pin location is raised from 283 specs. As these pistons are quite rare and expensive if you have to buy new, why bother. I would just refresh the 283 and ride off into the sunset. Like has been said you can bore to 4" and make a 302 but you still won't have a torque monster, just a high RPM higher HP 283 (depending on what you put inside) and still have to buy expensive pistons and rebalance the lower end. 283's rule for nostalgia engines. Be a ruler and use what you've got. BTW, at least put a 4 bbl on it. DUH! Frank
See above. You're talking about a motor that used to motivate a 4000lb+ car. And you're putting it into what? An open wheeler? So you've dropped 2000lb+. It'll be a screamer with intake/carb/headers/ignition. Trust us.....
i,m running a 283 in my 57 wagon. i put flat top pistons, a mild cam, headers, elderbrock intake and carb and it screams r
Hey Dan I gots a set of hump heads in the geerage. Do you want them? CHEEEEEP. Think I have a 327 crank too.
I just got wid of a free 283 up by me. I'm going to check it out. So now I ask who has tricks and tips for making some decent torque with the short stroke 283's?
You need to watch the valve size in the double humps. You can run the 1.94 and 1.5 combo heads. I think you get problems trying to run the larger 2.02 and 1.6 valve combo on the 283 cylinders.
1.72/1.50 are the largest valves that ever came on a 283, and 1.94/1.60 are the largest you can fit in a 283 without hitting the cylinder walls.
I am running power pac (spellin?) heads on my 63 283 all stock vette. It will soon be at home in the 29.
I have built a 311 283 before and it was an excellent engine. Take 1 1964 marine 283 block, 1 small journal 327 crank and a set of 307 pistons which are DIRT CHEAP. I paid $50 for a set of new Zollner pistons in 30 over. I added an el cheapo melling 214/224@50 camshaft, a set of ported 601 casting 305 heads (1.84/1.50 valves), and a stock marine square bore intake with a 600cfm Edelbrock. Ran great, got good gas milage and had lots of power.
OOPS, i thought you had TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THREE questions, and i had a little extra time to kill this morning.
power pack heads are the ones with the triangle on the ends, they have the small valves (1.72/1.50) and small chambers. camel hump heads are the ones with the camel humps on the ends, they have large valves (1.94/1.50 or 2.02/1.60) and small chambers. I go look in my shed when I need a set, but you can also find them at swap meets, machine shops, epay, want ads, etc. Power packs should be reasonably priced, camel humps usually sell for way more than they ought to.
I can't tell you, stranger. I only share info with those who are nice enough to introduce themselves. We even have a section dedicated to intros to make it easy. Mutt
I ran the Duntov 097 cam (57 Corvette solid lifter cam)in my 56 Chev with a 283 & 1.94 heads, C series AFB, back in the 60s. Ran quite well. I have a '56 265 bored to 283 I am going to put together, pop ups, power pak heads, Engle solid lifter cam, was in a deceased friend's street roadster, with 3x2s, and later altered roadster with Enderle injection in the mid 60s. I gave away a lot of 283 stuff years ago when I quit fooling with cars, wish I had kept it.
