what is the best thing to use on a couple of vinyl bucket seats that have been in a shed for a few years? looks like mildewy crud. they are in good shape and i want to clean them so i can change the color. thanks
I use this with a wide brush to get into the Vinyl pores . http://www.ppcbest.com/formula_2.htm After you use it, if you are going to re-dye them, you need to get a Vinyl prep solvent to open the pores so the Vinyl Die spray will adhear. I use this Vinyl prep http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...2IHgDQ&usg=AFQjCNGOwUVrEE6KBBMznKc9yKcoBtJdOw If you don't use the Vinyl prep the spray die won't adhere well. And of course only use Vinly die spray - not regular spray paint.
I'd scrub them with Simple Green (diluted) and a good scrub brush before the vinyl prep. I've used lacquer thinner as a prep before dying and had good luck with that too. But they gotta be clean.
if they have gone a little hard i know what makes them soft again, paint remover in a spray can, sounds kind of dangerous i know but try it on some other vinyl thats gone hard first, even if it's gone so hard that you can poke a hole with your thumb it will become a soft as a baby's bum, i sometimes spray it on a rag and whipe it on and other times i spray it right on the seat and then rub it in and off kind of at the same time.
once i get them clean, i plan on using the sem prep and paint. thanks for the suggestions, all appreciated
409 or simple green are what I use.... or whatever I find burried in my cabinet when i run out of the good stuff
There's a vinyl and leather cleaner/conditioner that works great on old seats I think mothers makes it I tryed it a few years ago on a 69 truck the seat was looking ruff but was 100% intact I ran out of $$ before getting to finish interior so I got it just to see what it would do as far as I know the same seat is still in the truck
OK, this is kind of on topic. I had an interior guy tell me one time that the best thing to use on vinyl upholstery after you clean it is baby oil. He contends that vinyl is made of petroleum products, as is baby oil. He said never to use Armor All on any vinyl. Good advice? Or B.S.?

Diluted 409 then wipe real well with a damp towel to get any excess cleaner off. Armor All is terrible builds up a coating and eventually causes plastic to crack. It was the best marketed product in its day. Still have an unused bottle in the garage if anyone wants it. If you use baby oil be sure to wear a seat belt.
