I know there are alot of pics of 60 chevy's on here but there isn't a whole lot of pics with the grills that you can make out very well. I want a change for my 60. I was going to put a rusty 54 chevy grill in there instead but its not working out real well does anyone have any other types of custom grills in a 60 chevy? I'm trying to get some Ideas thanks.

  2. This one has a '60 Merc grille and a 59 Chev bumper. Only one I have a picture of. Stu

Mine's got a similar tube grill. This shot was really of the striping, but it shows the grill pretty good too.

Don't mean to siderack, just a slight tangent I think, but I too am looking for some "traditional radical custom" front end treatments for the '60 Chevy.
I've seen the red and purple scalloped one on carnut.com.
Are there any more, even more radical than that?
Either current cars or archived pics of cars from back when?
I'm interested in some treatment that changes the whole look of it, not just shaving the existing oval opening, if there is/was such a thing.
as radical as that '59 Impala Cushenbery did, only a '60.

I decided that looking at custom '59's was useless because when ya get down to it, the '59 and '60 are lightyears apart, style wise, below the beltline, and what looks good on one doesn't work at all on the other.
The '60 is "spaceshippy" and the '59 is "gothic bat" (that make any sense?)

Start with the headlights. Go to an old junkyard with lots of sixties and seventies iron. Look for some interesting real chrome headlight cans or painted pods. Check out the Chrysler line from the late fifties/early sixties. If you see a nice possibility, pop the hood and see how long the can is. Some were chromed the whole length, but only an inch or so showed. Look for singles and dual setups, too.

When you find the winners, take them home, polish them up. Remove your current grille and headlights and pop them in your Chevy. Stand back and have a good look. Like what you see? Different from all others? Good!

Now start thinking about the grille. With the headlights anchoring either end, see whats left in the middle. Design the grille to visually support the chrome at either end. The visual weight of the grille should match the visual weight of the headlights. With that now empty space in the middle, try a few simple sketches or photoshop work. Try it with tubes, bullets, teeth, whatever. Maybe a vertical painted center bar or V for a split effect.

When you find the sort of fill that works for you, look for suitable chrome pieces to make it work. Thery don't have to be originally automotive, either!

This is a little more than just a grille swap but it really looks good. 61 Caddy parts I think.

59 Buick grilles look good in 60s also.

I have heard of (but don't have pictures of) people using '59 Imperial grilles in 59-60 Chevs. Easy to see why when you look at a '59 Imperial grille. Would be a tough one to find but I think it would blend in perfectly, using the Imperial's headlights and the toothy bar and the '60 surround. I'll try to do a photoshop to explain. Here's what a '59 Imperial looks like

Here's my crappy Photoshop'd '60 Impala with a '59 Imperial grille. Not my best work but gives you an idea of the swap I'm thinking of

For my money the '60 Merc grille is the best choice.
It's custom but looks stock. It fits the car perfectly, in shape and design.

That's a clean and simple idea. I'd really like to see that with a '59 front bumper.

The 59 Imperial grilles are pretty hard to find, esp. in decent condition. I'd love to get one for my new project.
Another idea is to use mesh, and then put Pontiac "stars" in the mesh, insead of bullets. I think you need 55 or 56 Poncho quarter panel trim (4 pointed stars)

  18. Alot of guys used cabinet hardware in different ways for grille candy.

I could see some double pulls mounted vertically across the front of a '60, maybe just mounted on some black mesh.

I really like the '60 Merc though, it's always been one of my favs and I love the '61 Caddy, but it may require a little metalwork to get it right.

  19. The 60 Merc grille is a classic, but kind of like a Desoto grille in a 49-51 Merc...overdone.

Try a 62 Olds grille with all the badging removed. It has a real nice "peak" in the middle of it....

I have to agrre that the Olds grille looks very natural.
I think what I like about the Merc is the seperation of the headlights. It's such a wide space the seperated headlights seem to balance out the space more.
The Buick bar against the black grille is very tasteful too.
Tube grilles always look nice but they also look like....tube grilles.
I guess it just depends on the look you want. Obvious custom or a "make you think" custom.

  22. Theres a really cheap 62 Olds grille on the bay right now...
    da shizzle....
